“sweet citrus, bubblegum and tropical fruit”

Honey yellow with a soapy head that drops to a small layer of film. Smells of green hop, mango, guava, sweet lemon and yes pink bubblegum to my surprise. The flavor is of sweetened tropical stone fruits and very similar to fruit stripe gum in the background. If you were to really pay attention you can pick up a small amount of coconut water. The feel is where this beer is a win for me. Medium body that is slick and smooth like a coconut water I even want to say aloe. Low carbonation. Low perceived bitterness other than it being green and fresh.

    I would purchase this again.

StBM almost always has it. Yeah freshness varies (Thanks, distributor.)
Probably depends on how frequently I buy it . Gotta keep the supply chain moving , eh?

18 years of NBS? Thanks to @ChicagoJ for remembering that!
My new beer for today is Double Vanilla Noir from Prairie, a barrel aged stout with Madagascar vanilla and Tahitian vanilla. Just a nice little sipping beer.
The beer is pitch black with a modest orange/tan head that disappears quickly.
    Aroma of chocolate and vanilla.
The taste follows the nose, chocolate and vanilla.
Medium-bodied, alcohol not noticeable at all.

I certainly hoped to go against the grain with this next one, but it seems the masses were correct - unfortunately.

Funky Buddha Tropical Sunrise - Imperial Cream Ale (11.5% ABV) aged in tequila barrels with pomegranate and orange

Appearance: The massive chunky floaties triggered my gag reflex. I decanted carefully, leaving them behind in the bottle, and so I scored the appearance based on my pour, but if I had dumped in the entire glass - as I do with Belgian ales, by the way, as I prefer the yeast mixed in with the rest of the beer - this thing would have struggled to break 2.0. It's actually attractive decanted.

Aroma: Wow. Holy hell, wow. It smells like green peppers and poblanos soaked in gasoline. It just smells wrong.

Flavor: Better than the aroma, at least up front. It's on the sweet side, and the orange and pomegranate actually come through. Then the tequila hits, and it's not the kind of tequila you share with a fellow suave businessperson while making deals in the quiet private room of an exclusive restaurant, lounging on velvet couches with your own private attendant. No, it's the tequila that soaks your waking nightmares, the memory and regret of licking the spilled puddles of Corona soaking the floor of the Mexican dive bar to replace the fluids you hurled up hours ago just before passing out. You're not sure how you got there (or where your kidneys are). You're not sure if you have the strength to leave. You're not sure if you can trust the water. But you're damn sure not having another sip of this extreme beer.

(That's not true. I had more than one sip to verify this existential crisis of a beer. If anything, it made me question whether or not my scores were too high.)

Mouthfeel: It's a bit fizzy, and it's big and hot, but the mouthfeel isn't itself a problem. It actually would drink quite well - if it tasted completely different.

This is just bad. I won't finish it (my wife had one sip and gagged). Neither my liver nor my taste buds deserve that extra punishment. I'm honestly not certain I can manage many more sips for the review without gagging; the tequila is that strong, and that poor.

Well, negative double digits on rDev, so I suppose this beer is for someone. I can imagine alternating sips with Corona, using each as a chaser for the other, desperately trying to drown out one terrible taste with another in the beer world equivalent of mutually assured destruction.

Greetings fellow NBSers! Quite the mixed morning so far here in the Fourth Corner, sunny, then some stiff winds and hard rain, then it was partly cloudy, now it's partly sunny, and the forecast calls for more rain. Shrug.

Had a pretty chill week, worked just one show at the theatre, a band I'd never heard of called Watchhouse (they were formerly known as Mandolin Orange), but I enjoyed quite a bit. One of the perks of working stage door security is getting to see most of the show, and hanging a bit with the band (we had a bit of a discussion of the merits of smoking the Devils Lettuce vs Edibles. I'm on Team Edibles), and I get paid. We've got a big show coming this week, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit. Long day for me, but I am ready for this show!

Cheers to @malty for kicking off NBS 18 years ago (NBS can vote!), to @mattcrill for providing Malty solid support, and to everyone else who has kept it rolling.

Starting my NBS with a sub-optimal murkbomb from Firestone Walker Mind Haze Double IPA. I was not impressed, but, the can was over a year old (thanks Bevmo!): https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2210/570714/

What more special way to celebrate this threads anniversary than to open up a beer sent by a friend met through this thread, @snaotheus. It was a pleasure sharing beers with him in Seattle and he continues to share them through the mail. I’ve been here I think every weekend since somewhere around August 2020 and it has been a true joy. It honestly reminded me of what I forgot to love about beer, exploring and trying new beers and new styles; something I had sadly gotten away from for a while. I’ve tried so many beers because of recommendations/reviews on here or cause @BBThunderbolt, @snaotheus or @beergoot sent them my way. I also never used to review beers until I participated in this thread, it’s been a true joy.

So as the kids rest I’m sitting out front enjoying this beautiful beer because of this thread.

Garden Path Fermentation- the curious mix methods fourth edition

This is a beautiful pouring beer, in the sunlight it was like liquid gold. In the glass it gets a little darker as the volume increases and a beautiful white head forms. Settles to some white islands and a ring of white microbubbles.

A very refreshing and pleasant aroma, slightly sweet sour, white grapes, mineral, and fresh baked lemon bars.

The taste is less sour than the nose let’s on, it’s much less mix fermented than you’d think. It has a clean taste to it with the lemon citrus showing last, also has a nice grassiness and slight malt taste to it. I have to add this edit cause as it warms I get a nice apple flavor too, quite enjoyable.

Light drinking, way lighter than the abv of 6.7%. Not too sour, just enough, subtle sweet sensation, and a lively carbonation on the tongue.

I don’t know much about mixed ferm beers but I know that this one is incredibly enjoyable to me. It’s just complex enough but also refreshing and simple. Thanks for sharing Ryan.

I may be back with my last @snaotheus beer he gave me in Seattle. It’s a doozy so I need help from the mrs, we’ll see if she’s willing. Cheers everyone and thanks for my favorite part of this site.

I desperately needed a palate cleanse (I swear there's still tequila and oak hanging around the back of my mouth), so I went with another Hop Butcher for the World offering from @FBarber .

To Know is to Love is an 8% NE-style IIPA with Nectaron, Motueka, Simcoe, and Citra. That's a pretty solid hop bill, albeit with some overlap.

It certainly leans tropical, both on the nose and palate, with a bit of citrus bite. Smooth and creamy; easy drinking. It's clearly "big," but it's never harsh, either in coming across too boozy or too malty.

My only criticism is that it doesn't really bring anything new to the game, but it's a very well executed murky hop bomb. I'd gladly drink more than one in an evening.

That is awesome, give us a Jason Isbell update, I'd love working a job like that. I remember listening to some mandolin orange sometime ago, don't know them well enough to know they changed names. I'll give them some listens tomorrow at work on my prep breaks.

I was team smoke most of my life but the second I was introduced to tincture with labeled concentration I'm now firmly on the same team as you. Having that dosing control is a thing of beauty that I have really really enjoyed having.

Lakes & Legends Salted Caramel Stout, 6.2% ABV. Pours deep brown, with a four-finger light brown head that left tons of foamy lacing. Nose is light caramel. Taste is faint caramel, roast malt, and salt, faintly sweet, quite bitter. Mouthfeel is a bit watery, dry, with decent carbonation. Overall very good.

I don't use regularly, but I buy 1-1 CBD-THC gummies (5mg each) and when I have long days, where I'm on my feet and moving for 10-14 hours straight, I take one after a couple beers, about an hour before I'm ready for bed. I sleep solid through the night, no tossing and turning, and wake up refreshed with no aches.

I buy a 10 piece bag for about $30-35, and at first I thought that was expensive. Then I realized that a freaking pint at the brewery/bar is $6-8 these days, and realized the gummies are a bargain. I will sometimes (like at a cookout or something) take a hit off a friends vape pen, and it usually hits me too strong. Them gummies though, they're magic.

Sounds about exactly how I feel, I always take some CBD along with it to make it 1-1. I'm really looking forward to when our legal sales finally start, until then its medical purchases through my friend . Just was never worth the fees for me to get my card.

Back with my second entry today, and I'll be able to post this in the Celery Thread as well. Cascade Foudre #1. No idea when it was actually brewed or packaged, but it was added to the site in 2014. and, it's great. A must-try if you ever see it.

I have not spent much time on this site in the last several months. I have too much beer and zero time. I am looking forward to posting and drinking more beer. I was overworked and underpaid, a job change happened. Today I will start with an older beer, eclipsing the expiration date, Shaken Milkshake IPA. I am not a fan of Milkshake IPA's I gave the beer a 3.92. The appearance was excellent but the beer has herbal and floral notes that distract from the flavor.

Based on the last few years, Schell's has staked out a territory of being perhaps the best brewer of porters in the state, both traditional and Baltic, and without tarting them up with adjunks.

I bought their fall-winter "Brewer's Stash" sample box just for this beer. The other beers in the box range from excellent (the Vienna lager Firebrick) to OK (the Cream Ale) and are in Schell's regular lineup. So, buying the box for the porter was no real sacrifice.

Schell's This Is The Pilot Speaking - Limited Batch 004 Porter
    ABV: 4.8%
    IBU: 38
    [IMG]
Clear ruby-brown, moderate level of rising bubbles, with a towering, thick, tan, soft-serve head that has excellent retention and leaves rows of sticky lacing.

Nutty brown sugar aroma, toffee, lightly roasted.

Flavors repeat the aroma, with the addition of caramel and grass. The roasted malts are more prominent, but still in the background. The initial taste is smooth, slightly sweet, transitioning with the roasty bitterness appearing in the middle and ending with a roasty somewhat dry finish and light roasted bitterness lingering in the aftertaste. The aftertaste is excellent.

The mouth feel is light and smooth, with easy drinkability.

Overall, a well-done traditional porter that, thankfully, has not been tarted up (as I typed above) with all kinds of adjunks. It has just the right flavors and just the right touch of roastiness and bittering. If you like porters, grab it while you still can. It's only in the Schell's Brewer's Stash variety pack.

Coffee Siberian Night by Thirsty Dog
    [IMG]

9% and new to their canned line, this Russian imperial stout was poured from a pint can. The head on this variant was nice but dissipated more quickly than the standard and there was also less lacing. Nose is all about the coffee with background char. Delightful.

The malty roastiness remains similar to the base stout, but the favor is supported by a bold coffee flavor. The flavor has a similar hoppiness, but the finish is a bit smoother here and a bit drier in the original . Perhaps a glimpse of chocolate in the finish here.

Overall a good, safe variant of a solid stout.
