Dontcha know? If it's a "craft" brewery, the label is a tribute or a parody. It's only a trademark violation if it's a macro.

    You know, like this one.

    Whoa...

And, damn, when did Marvel's Thor grow a beard?

(Haven't paid much attention to comics since the mid-70s. Anything else happen that I missed?)

I took this to be a modern interpretation of the classic Busch Bavarian label until I read @steveh post.

Another beer for this weekend, Klockow Brewing Lundr's Lager, with artwork that was probably not swiped from anywhere:
Appearance: Clear dark amber, good head.

    Smell: Nice smoked ham aroma.

Taste: Caramel sweetness, biscuity start, smoke starts underneath and becomes more prominent. Ashy at first then more hammy.

Overall: Excited to see this smoked lager as Mr. Klockow used to work at Hammerheart. It's a different beast than Hammerheart, much more sweetness to go along with the smoke. I appreciate the different take on the brew.

Spoiler alert: Steve Rogers had a beard for a while... big contention between egos.

(psst... nobody say anything about "Fat Thor" to Jess -- I don't think he could take it!)

Being in the midst of having seen The Last Kingdom and currently working through the older The Vikings, I find your reference to Odin really interesting. I'm about 15% Nordic and monotheism for me is not a priority.

Good morning, Weekenders! New Beer #1 this Sunday is something I've been anticipating for a long time, so when I saw a three month old mix pack in the chiller, I didn't hesitate to pull the trigger.

As I mentioned, this Bell's Black Hearted is almost three months old. Unlike the Two Hearted I had from the same pack (which showed a touch of staleness), you'd never know it.

The aroma leans heavily on the malt base (which could, admittedly, be one effect of the age). As I sampled the beer and prepared my chili, the aroma blended well with the 2018 Narwhal I added to the mix; it's not exactly a stout, but there's enough licorice and light char that it was very similar. I'd say it even leans slightly closer to hoppy stout territory than pure IPA.

Excellent balance on the palate. I found as I got down to my last sips, I was enjoying it more and more, and even had to tweak my rating slightly. Citrus and pine from the hops, toast, licorice, and bitter chocolate from the malts. The hops are definitely complementary, and not front and center. Again, that could be due partially to the age, but it seems that may have been the focus, as well - and Two Hearted itself isn't an over the top hop bomb to begin with.

Where this beer really shines, like it's older brother, is in the superb drinkability. It's quite bitter, but in a way that really readies you for the next sip immediately. This thing was more than half gone before I'd really even tried to pick apart the flavors for the review, and I'm tempted to go grab another one for my next beer.

This isn't the most explosive or expressive take on the style, but it's very solid. As you should expect from Bell's, it's balanced, cleanly executed, and incredibly drinkable.

Good morning BAs! Today’s breakfast beer is Firestone Walker’s 25th Anniversary Ale, a recent Tavour purchase:

Bottled 2021. Poured at 52°. Dark brown/black with ruby hues; creamy tan head with a few rocks; ok cap retention, solid ring; some sudsy lace; thin legs. Tequila and oak nose; boozy exhale. Sweet caramel and sugary raisins; some sharp tequila immediately follows; oaky vanilla and chocolate as beer warms. Medium plus body, silky feel; burn on tip of tongue; warmth from 11.5% abv; light carbonation; dry wooden finish. Overall, this blend of multiple barrels, including Tequila Barrel Merkin (28%) is sharp and spirits forward; the rest is nice, but the tequila continues to linger as I finish this review; as long as FW keeps blending its leftover Tequila barrel aged beers into the Anniversary, I’m going to take a break from buying FW Anniversary ales…they’re good, but not what appeals to me.

Cheers y’all, and have a spectacular Sunday!

Good morning NBS/nbw and thanks @Roguer for hosting this weekend.
Its mud season in the hills, the rains and northern snow melt have the Connecticut River up quite a bit. Maple sugaring is in full swing here in WMass.
Todays offering is from Drowned Lands Brewery.
An interesting thought experiment as I enjoyed this fine pilsner was to take the grain and hop bill, (40% German malted wheat, 60% Floor Malted Pilsner, Petit Blanc hops) change the yeast only to a Belgian Saisonn strain and see what happens.
Anyway The fruity aromatics and texture are the bright spot here. The body is in keeping with the style, Quite a nice offering.

Poured from an undated 16 oz can, into the test glass.
A - First off the can art/label is challenging. Pours a slightly hazy dark straw color. Carbonation is vigorus, a pillowy white cap is pretty quickly out the door.
S - Green grape skin, light grains, add a floral hops with some citrusy threads in there. orange jam comes to mind
T - The grape, and flowery hop is up front, light cracker, lemongrass, a bit of bright apricot as well
M - Crisp, soft texture, semi sweet start quickly move toward the almost tart side. Body is medium with the linger being fruity and dry.
O - An interesting pilsner, its very fruity for the style. I like that element. The body made softer by the wheat is compelling .I look forward to trying another in the summer months

Good afternoon NBW on this glorious spring day here!

I got a haul and a mixed one at that of some Belgian and Dutch beers earlier this weekend as a present for my birthday. Cool friends I have I assure you. Especially considering they’re all new beers to me which means I can chime in here.

    Breugem “Asian Dubbel”:

Quite honestly I have no idea what they mean by Asian Dubbel but I’m a curious man, the label says it’s sweet and juicy, about time to verify this claim.

We have a 330ml bottle and a ABV of 6,5%. Beer left in this Guinness pint a two inches white head fading fast. No lacing. It’s also a Dutch beer.

Smells is overmingly spicy and juicy. Until now they didn’t lie on their label. Onto the palate now…

Taste is a fine variety of berries, orange peel, some lemon and a bitterness finish to it. Interesting! Uncommon but pleasant.

Mouthfeel is a medium bodied Dubbel with high carbonation.

Overall a pleasant experience and have no idea where my friends got this one but will need to ask to buy some more. The drinkability and for a Dubbel the relatively low ABV makes it great.

I am sure this would pair really well with South East Asian food, or Vietnamese and Thai, no doubt. Have never heard of the term Asian Dubbel before but an idea for me to enjoy this with some fine Asian cuisine.

    Cheers!

Still morning, so: good morning, Weekenders!

My second new beer of the day is ... well, let's just get into it, because wow.

If you know Barreled Souls, you know. They occupy two out of my top 30 beers all time (both barleywines). When they put out their best, very few in the world can top them.

Blonde on Blonde is a very bright and hoppy blonde barleywine. It's a good beer, but not my favorite (based only on a sample pour, which is why I haven't rated it). This is the same beer, but aged in Barton Bourbon barrels for a few days shy of a year. As with all wax cap Barreled Souls offerings, it's extremely limited, which by itself doesn't make a beer any better - but it does make regret over not purchasing more very real.

And make no mistake: I should have purchased more.

The significant aging has had some dramatic effects on this beer, even if expected. The color is significantly darker, with a ruddy copper color several steps removed from the blonde barleywine roots. The other effect is that the brightly bitter hops have significantly faded into the background, resulting in a beer much, much closer to an English / British barleywine.

It's very sweet, in the best traditions of barleywine malt soup. It's complex, rich, challenging, and rewarding. It's big and bold, but not at all harsh; 13.9% ABV isn't even on my radar.

The bourbon comes to play in spades, and damn does it go well with the base beer. Tasting notes from my review:

"The huge malt base leads the way, the bourbon coming on near mid sip; the two then dance their way together through the rest of the sip. Tasting notes lean toward fruity and sweet, in particular honey, grape, coconut, brown sugar, and vanilla. Additional notes include caramel, leather, lemon, and tea."

Yeah, I like this one. A lot. I actually had relatively low expectations (stupid me), and consequently have held on to it for a couple of months before finally cracking it open. It's rare that I set my expectations so much lower than the resulting experience, but I'm happy to have been proven so thoroughly wrong.

Poured from a can , pack dated 2/29/2022 into the test glass
A - A slightly hazy light copper color. steady carbonation feeds a neve leaving white cap/ Lacing is outstanding
S - Caramel, rising mixed grain bread, a bit of earthy musty hops. hints of toffee, Earl Grey tea.
T - All the aromatics and some light fruit jam on cracker. the slightest hint of light brown molasses.
M - Semi sweet start, crisp carbonation moves things along, a lovely yellow swing toward bitter before the long exit.
    Again with marmalade on cracker
O - I cant say enough about this 4.5% slightly woody, open fermented treat. Fires on all cylinders
od afternoon NBS/nbw back with a beautiful Bitter
Full disclosure I did have one earlier this week, but onto the talking points.
OEC has been a mixed bag for me since it began, Lately however has been more than impressive. This offering screams cask pull!! Marris Otter, a touch of Crystal malt, Challenger and East Kent Goldings. Thats a formula
The texture and taste all are Pub, Pub, Pub at 4.5% and smooth as silk we could solve the worlds problems with an afternoon of these treats.
    Cheers all
    Do good

Good morning and Happy Sunday. It's sunny and will be warming to the upper seventies. However, the wind is supposed to pick up and there is the possibility of blowing dust.
My new beer for today is Buffalo Plaid a Baltic Porter from Bow & Arrow in Albuquerque.

The beer is black with a small off-white head and a bit of lace.
Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate.
Taste of dark chocolate, espresso, and char.
Medium-bodied. I liked the bitterness in the aftertaste.
