I have much more issue with buying a mix case and the box says packed on 10 April, I think cool it’s just 1 May. I buy the beer open the case and the four different types in the mix all have different canned on dates and they go back to February. Fuck your. Code the case/12 pack as the date of the earliest beer in the box, not when you put it in the box.

    Enjoy

    Yes I do.

And on a similar note I think the 12/15 months best by duration used by some (most?) German breweries is absolutely bat shit crazy.

Just put a packaged on date and I will make the decision when the beer is too 'old'.

    Cheers!

Totally insane for sure but worse then that was when Sixpoint was giving their IPAs a 9 month shelf life. Not sure if they still are doing that but at one point they were!

With "Rant" in the title, I've seen all I need to see. no reason to bother watching at that point.

I check the date code before I buy the beer - prevents much ranting (esp. on video) and replaces it with silent, slow head-shakes in the store as I move to the next beer I might have an interest in.

I suppose "best" is very subjective.

I think brewers that use Best By dates understand that and capitalize on it. As a matter of fact I think that's the whole point of having a subjective term like Best By.

Greg... is a prophet. Not many beer reviewers b!tched about best by dates a few years ago like Greg did, and now I see bits and pieces of other reviewers doing it.

I thing Greg(g???) Puckett is responsible for making me, and many others, actively seek beer can dating now. And generally avoiding hoppy beers what don't date decently. No one has time to monitor Instagram for X beers... just effin date the cans.

    Exactly! 100%.

I have been following him for years and I can without a doubt say that he has been very influential in the beer tube community and especially in bringing about awareness of best by dates.

I haven't watched Greg in a while but in my mind I can hear him saying, "This is an A- beer here, guys, but I'm going to have to give it a B+ because it doesn't have the damn date on the bottle. Put the damn date on the bottle!".

What about malt flavor, feel/body. I have a hard time believing that the only flavor noticeable is grapefruit and a hint of orange. I wouldn’t say that beer looked like a Westcoast IPA either.
I think he had too much "Kush" during the break.
Most of the reviews I have looked at here on BA are a bit more content rich than Greg's little rant. Cheers.

The subject of this thread is with regards to Best By Dates especially with regards to IPA using Greg as an example, not Greg's beer review process.

As far as dates are concerned, the beer had a bb date and a coded canned on date so he had nobody but himself to cry at for buying a 5 month old IPA.

I don't like it when beers are not dated or the date is illegible.

I thought his rewiew lacked content so I commented negatively on it. I did not enjoy watching it with all the complaining.

    “Taste is Subjective.”

That ripe, old chestnut is one I go to when the going gets rough. Rough like Greg’s whiskey voice (and despite his gristled, geezerly outward appearance I bet he’s a soft touch when it comes to some things, like warm socks out of the dryer or fuzzy sweaters).

For starters, I have -on occasion- enjoyed Pils from Germany at 8 months past packaging (although for 9 months and beyond, I can’t say the same), and on a few occasions I’ve even enjoyed American-CRAFT IPA older than five months! :astonished:

Just why this is, I am not sure (is my palate broken, and if so, has it always been?), but the Craft Nerdery’s collective tendency to engage in predictable histrionics over such matters of (e.g.) “IPA has a shelf life of only TWO WEEKS!!!1112” has eclipsed self-mockery and entered a realm of performance art heretofore unknown.

I blame it on the internet, naturally.

I pass on a lot of beer I might otherwise have enjoyed, due to poor dates, indecipherable dates, or no dates.

I rarely drink skunky beer, but that's because I rarely roll the dice. There are too many damn good brews out there. No need for a rant.

When it comes to IPAs the bigger issue with age IMO is hop fade. After a month or two the hop aroma is noticeably diminished and with an additional few months the hop flavor fades as well.

A couple of days ago I drank my last homebrewed version of Pliny the Elder which was bottled 12/21/21 so about 5 months old at this point. That beer did not taste 'bad' or 'awful' and in a certain sense I would say I enjoyed drinking that last bottle but I personally could not 'shake the feeling' of how much better this beer smelled 3 months ago and how much the flavor was 1-2 months ago.

Perhaps hop fade is a lesser 'issue' for you?

    Cheers!

Could not agree more. Put a packaged date and let me decide.
