This is my first post in BA. I haven't yet brewed my first batch. Not even an extract. Seems like a pretty awesome thing to do and I can't wait to get past my first few extract batches in order to move into a full grain profile. So, I'm doing some research.

I am curious about some mash options: I just researched mashing today and I saw that if you buy whole grains that you have to crack them before adding them into the mash tun. I saw on a documentary that i watched some time ago that a scotch distillery germinated the barley before creating their mash. I wasn't sure if they also went through and also cracked it too before adding it into the mash.. but that's my question: can you, instead of cracking the whole grain, get it to germinate?

No, malted barley has already been germinated as part of the malting process.

The distillery that you mention was simply malting their own barley before proceeding to mashing and fermentation. Malting companies that specialize in the process will perform the malting step and then dry the grain before it goes to a homebrew supplier to sell it to you. You just need to crack the grain and mash it to get this fermentation process going.
