I'm on my second brew and first time using my temp controlled ferment chamber (chest freezer). Been fermenting for about 30 hours now and I apparently stuck my head into it a little too far trying to make sure the temperature probe was firmly attached. Took a breath while I was down there and just about knocked myself out from the fumes, lol. Thought it was pretty funny and also pretty stupid, but surely I'm not the only one who's done it.
Yeah, you have to hold your breath when you're in there. Quite a few people have died at commercial breweries/distilleries overcome by the fumes.
That's how many times I've done it, and it won't be happening again. In my case I stupidly stuck my head in the keezer to check the connections of my kegging setup after my 5# CO2 tank leaked out. If you ever need evidence that CO2 is denser than ambient air, try this (DON'T).
Yep, first time fermenting in my chest freezer i wanted to smell the airlock on an ipa, got a big ol whiff of co2 lol, didnt pass out or anything it was nasty though
The first time I did this was with an Oktoberfest. I took a big whiff when I pulled the lid off the fermenter, and it was like inhaling a cigar. At the time, I thought it must've been from fusel alcohols, but later realized that all beer is this way, because I actually tried it again!
Yep, first time my first keg kicked in the keezer and I wanted one last whiff of that bourbon barrel porter before I dumped the sludge out. Life lesson learned.
