Hello BA, this is my first post on these forums and it's a question about blending hops. For my fourth batch I plan on brewing an APA and I recently placed an order at Yakima Valley for 18oz of hop pellets. I am looking for suggestions on which ones to use and when to use them. Here's the list: 6oz Columbus 6oz Galena 2oz Cascade 2oz Citra 2oz Amarillo I figured I would use about 8oz in this beer, and planned on bittering with Columbus, but am a little stuck on which ones to use for flavor and aroma, how many of each, and when to add them. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated
Columbus, Cascade and Amarillo would all work for flavor/aroma. I'd consider Citra for a late aroma addition or dry hop... Save the Galena to use for bittering in a different batch.
Yeah I was planning on a 5gal batch. How much would you suggest I use? I was planning on adding almost all of them late boil/in a hop stand cause I'm going for a very hop forward beer without too much bitterness.
Not knowing what you're going for, and I'm just spitballing here, I would say Galena at 60 to 35ibu 1oz Amarillo @ 10min 1oz Citra @ FO w/ a bit of a hop steep 1oz eac Citra and Amarillo DH You'll get your fill of hops
Columbus, Citra and Amarillo go well together. You could use all 3 within the last 10 minutes, maybe 2oz of each at FO. You should play with one of the calculators to see what kind of IBUs different boil times give you. If you post a specific recipe, you will get more useful comments.
