IMHO the only unique attribute may be the soft mouth feel. But even that's subjective. So shades of an American IPA is where they fall 4 me. And I'd really appreciate undoctored photos, think that may tell a more accurate story of their visual appeal. My $0.02. Carry on, I'm going 2 continue 2 enjoy my Cafe Racer 15!

we may have to call this a WIPA? I think there has been enough proof of the existence of juicy cloudy ipas to put this thread to rest. turns out there are other breweries besides trillium, treehouse, and alchemist that can make a beer like this...who knew?

I think they are all over the place. Had this in Seattle last weekend, Citral Extra Pale:[IMG]

I posted a shot of Fate Brewing's Summer Session IPA (Scottsdale, AZ) earlier in the thread. Here's a shot of their recently released Down Unda pale ale w/ Nelson and Galaxy. Straight up opaque. Maybe the NE popularized this style; maybe not. Either way, they're definitely being brewed all over the country.

Late addition of hops that add a juice like flavor w/ little actual bitterness doesnt qualify for a new style....just my opinion.

Would this be a beer that's Cheats you on flavor, or comes with reduced carbonation? If it does that it is definitely a New England style.

You are absolutely correct. Don't let these guys bust your balls. There are so many great breweries in New England that are consistently turning out IPA that we both know isn't happening in other parts of the country - Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, Foley Brothers, Trillium, Bissell Brothers, Kelso, Sixpoint (don't forget NY).

The Pernicious IPA that Wicked Weed put out is billed, in their own words, as a West Coast IPA, which is funny, because it's way better than any West Coast IPA and is definitely New England in aroma, taste, and mouthfeel.

To say New England style IPAs are superior is just a matter of personal preference, but it's my preference as well.

Just had a Westbrook One Claw pale ale tonight - one of their staple beers going back years. As always, it was hazy, pillow-soft, and juicy as heck. South Atlantic IPAs deserve their own style!!!!

Especially since multiple posts in this thread have shown pics of IPAs that are cloudy as hell, a la NE's finest, and which, anecdotally, are really damn good. Again, maybe the hazy style started in the NE; maybe it didn't. But it's foolishness to think they have a monopoly on that riff of IPA, any more than thinking California/OR/WA are the only states making clear, bracing "West Coast" style IPAs.

Heck, that looks like it still falls under the traditional style guidelines allowing light to moderate haziness.

The history/lineage (and hopefully future) of the New NE IPA always goes through Greensboro Bend....

I do wonder how different a lot of these look when the entire picture is colored. In my experience with the Trillium beers, they're not quite as hazy as they're made out to be.

I just like good beer, especially TreeHouse stuff, so not sure what my $.02 are worth. But I did send 3 super fresh cans of Julius to the West Coast to beer-snob/geek friends. Two in San Diego and one in Portland, OR. Here is what the three of them said in a brief message board convo:

    Portland:
"we both agreed it wasn't anything we expected. definitely not a typical, overly dank and bitter "west coast IPA". it was like...LUSH. or something. juicy?

    totally amazing."

    San Diego 1:
"Sure did! Great fruit notes without being a fruit beer. Refreshing and balanced."

    San Diego 2:
"I wish I had a grapefruit sculpin to have right after it. They are similar but Julius is more orange rind bitter than grapefruit juice bitter to my pallet."

On a side note, all 3 have yet to find something to send to me that will match the Julius I sent them.

My $.02: I do think there is a difference between IPA's here and elsewhere. I absolutely love what I can get here in New England. If you think you've got something that'll knock my socks off, send it my way. I'll return the favor with a Julius or something when I get more.
