Swung by Kenosha Woodman's on my way from skiing a few days ago. Picked 6-packs of Two Women, Cabin Fever (it's out and even better than I remember it), Gyrator (there're still some strays left), and Fat Squirrel. Passed on coffee stout, for good, and mocha bock - for now.

Same. Not terrible, but really boring, in my opinion.

That's exactly what I thought after the first bottle of Fat Squirrel.

I went with the 4 pack of Blueberry Cocoa Stout over the Mocha Berry Bock when I went by Woodman's last weekend. Once it warmed up it tasted like every other really good New Glarus fruit beer, but I didn't get stout or cocoa or anything else at that point. It did have some muddled cocoa notes when cold, but they disappeared. Maybe a gateway stout for their fruit beer fans?

Ah, glad you started this. Wanted to say, had another bottle of Gyrator today, and it's only getting better, which is unreal. You're lucky Wisconsin.

I am from Wisconsin - grew up drinking their beer. I have yet to have a single sip of their beer that I give a single goddamn about ever having again. They’re a gas station brewery, their fruiteds are fine if you’re in the mood - but bleching blech. Carry on.

Funny you should mention that. The first time I had their beer I wasn't that into craft, and I rode in on a quad from the UP having no where else to eat but a "gas station"...which also happened to have NG on the shelves.

Despite us being covered in mud, we were welcomed in to what also happened to be the most homey gas station I'll probably ever experience in my life. Lunch was great (scratch made pizza, whoda thunk?!) and the beer even better.

Sure, their beers are no frills for the most part, but when their signature quality overlaps with a well constructed brew, no one does it better.

Many do it better. But glad you had a pleasant gas station beer experience with watery, near-flavorless beers.

A friend dropped this one off last weekend and I have got to say it was the first NG beer I've had in years that I just did not like - it tasted like swiss miss cocoa in a bad stout with blueberry syrup in it. Actually come to think of it, the last NG beer I disliked this much was the coffee stout ... so at this point I just don't trust them on anything they call a stout.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that you're not a big lager fan?

No. But they make more than lagers which also are mediocre. Warm ass, months old “Scream” on gas station shelves - mmmmmmmmmm ….

I never buy scream since they don't date the bottles, but fresh at the brewery its a nice beer.

So to conclude, we hate their stouts and hopped beers but we like gyrator and a fun experience at a gas station eating lunch with their beer after 4 wheeling - got it. Anyways, I’ve had almost all their shit, including R&Ds. They’re cheap and available and I pass hard on them.

#1 problem with New Glarus, in my humble opinion.

Well, duh, low IBU European-style lagers for $7.50 for 6-pack of bottles. Bottles! That sure ain't craft brewing as I know it.
