Berliner apfel is delicious and I'll be more than happy to pick it up again.

Yeah this beer rules. Wish Apple Ale would a comeback (or maybe it did and I missed it) but the Berliner will do for now.

How different is it from a cider?

its nothing like a cider - its way less sweet, it's got the consistency and mouthfeel of a beer rather than a cider which is very thin and watery, and it tastes like a beer with apple added, not cider.

Confirming my hard pass. Thank you.

Having "Berlin" in its title I sort of expected it to be a Berliner Weiß... with apple added.

That is what it is. It's a sour apple wheat beer.

Berliner weiss is a perfect base for what Dan is doing with apple, imo. It's a great pairing.

I'll be grabbing a 4-pack when it comes out for sure. Loved it last time it was out and glad to see that it's making a comeback.

The Pils coming out....is it too simplistic to think it's the 22 Pils they did last year and just move it to seasonal instead of Thumbprint series?

I would think they'd promote it as such.

That said, you know they're taking lessons from that one and all of the other Pilsners they've brewed.

Gotta hope the new pils is a worthy replacement!

According to the New Glarus podcast, it's not too simplistic at all. It seems there were a few minor tweaks to the recipe, but Dan said it was very similar.

The pilsner discussion starts at around the 34:00 mark of their latest podcast (Episode 28, "American Style Lagers")

So should we expect pilsner on shelves next week, or has it already started to make its way out this week?

Pilsner hitting the shelves in Madison area this week. [IMG][IMG]

Details of the beer posted by the brewery:
"New Glarus Brewing Company Releases New Glarus Pilsner — A New Brand in the Seasonal Series For most of his brewing career, Brewmaster Dan Carey has been on a ceaseless quest to brew the perfect pilsner. Throughout New Glarus Brewing’s history, Dan has been tweaking and modifying his pilsner recipe so he could bring his vision for this iconic beer style to market in Wisconsin. New Glarus Pilsner is that vision. Dan’s Holy Grail Pilsner starts with blurring the lines between old-school German and Czech styles. This beer uses heirloom pilsner malted barley and a double decoction mash to build an artful base on which Bavarian Diamant, Mittlefruh, Saphir, Select and Hallertau Blanc hops create a complex and easy bitterness coming in a 35 IBU. This beer then went through a six-week lagering before being packaged and shipped statewide. New Glarus Pilsner should be showing up in the market the week of April 24th. To find the closest location currently stocking New Glarus Pilsner please use the Beer Finder on the New Glarus Brewing website. New Glarus Pilsner is a spring/summer seasonal, and like all New Glarus seasonal beers is available for a limited time and designed to match the season. New Glarus Pilsner is available in six pack bottles, 12-pack cans, and on draft. Enjoy this career-long quest available only in Wisconsin!"

It appears they’ve added a new hop. One dovetail has played with before called Aramis. Seems similar to this Diamant hop that Dan clearly loves (it was in the dopplebock).

I’ve had 2 4pks of stammtisch since the bottles came back to market this winter. It’s excellent and the Aramis is hardly the star. I didn’t notice a difference until I looked at the recipe. I think the modern addition is a way to create subtle complexity and my guess is that these veteran American brewers are just taking notes from their friends overseas where these hops are being grown. Europe is surely using them more than we are over here
