A little off. Reminded of Enigma a couple batches ago that also tasted off to me. Maybe I’ll do a side-by-side with Cranbic. But I guess you can’t really expect these sours to taste the same every time.

It'd be really cool if one of those thumbprints was a Barley wine.

I'm from the CA and was planning a visit next weekend. A few questions:

    1. When do thumbprint series drop?
    2. When do RnD series drop?
    3. What is the tasting room like?
    4. Are there any breweries on the way to NG starting from Milwaukee?

I was planning to visit on a Monday. I appreciate your help!

This ain't Monkish bro. There's no "drops". Just good beer.

    @ubiq3000
Thumbprints will be plentiful everywhere you go. I haven't heard much chatter lately but there should be some R/D's left at the brewery. The next release won't be until June. Tasting room is nothing special, especially in the winter. No one offs or anything special.

Your first two questions have been answered, though which Thumbprints you find where can depend (the brewery sometimes sells out earlier than random little shops, and almost every little shop will have Thumbprints).

Do not get your hopes up about the tasting room. It's not anything special at all. That's not to say it's bad, but if you have high hopes, you will be underwhelmed and disappointed. There's seldom anything special on tap, the space is not that interesting (though the views around back are great, and the brewery is really impressive from a size and architecture perspective). The self-guided tour is also not going to wow you, but it's a fun little ten- to fifteen-minute diversion. The Hard Hat Tour is by all accounts awesome, but the waitlist goes out months, so you would have had to schedule it a while ago since they don't accept walk-ons. All in all, it's cool to go to say you went, the views are killer, the beers are, of course, fantastic (but can easily be found at every gas station in the state apart from the R&Ds), and the town of New Glarus itself is very quaint (I recommend eating at either Glarner Stube or Cow and Quince). Go in to the brewery with tempered expectations, and you'll really enjoy your time.

In Milwaukee, I recommend Black Husky for their great beers, MKE brewing and Lakefront for cool tours (but middling beers), and the Pabst brewery for historical purposes (plus PBR is delicious for what it is, and some of their newer specialty draft-only offerings have been cool). I also recommend Kickapoo Coffee if you're into coffee.

In Madison, Funk Factory Geuzeria is a must if you enjoy wild ales, and Karben4 is sort of worth your time plus maybe one of the Vintage locations.

Extremely helpful tips! What are the best bottle shops in MKE you think?

I think there are better bottleshops in Madison (Steve's locations, Riley's Wines of the World, Trixie's, Woodman's, Jenifer Street Market, and Star Liquor), but MKE has a few (Total Wine of course, any Woodman's location, Ray's Growler Gallery, and Discount Liquor in MKE proper or Waukesha are the ones that come to mind).

Is 4/16 when we can expect to see it at Woodmans around Wisconsin, or later in the week? Just trying to plan a little as SR sold out very quickly last year in the 12oz bottle format.

I'd say you have roughly 3-4 months to stock up as it's on their release calendar for 6 months.

Totally agree on Cheese Castle's prices. They're always the highest I've ever seen in WI. +1 on Woodman's. GREAT selection and prices. Be forewarned that they don't take credit cards. It's cash or check only. I'm not sure about debit cards. Also, they've got really good prices on gas.

Right about credit cards. They do take debit cards though. I can't remember if there is a surcharge for it but someone probably can chime in
