New Glarus Fruit Beers

    Very well put. I had these beers for the first time without any expectation that they'd be sour or dry and I absolutely LOVE them. Had I been expecting something more akin to Cantillon Kriek when I tasted this, I would likely have been very disappointed as well.

    I found them far too sweet with a note at the end that actually burned my mouth from the acidity. I tried two. I won't be trying any more. Just not my thing.... and I'm a fat bastard who likes sweet things as well.

    My order of preference:
    1. Serendipity
    2. Raspberry Tart
    3. Belgian Red
    4. Strawberry Rhubarb

    I'd be curious about the final gravity on these beers? Are they ACTUALLY sweet or is it just a perceived sweetness from all the fresh fruit flavor? You get some big stouts that are sweet-ish,and they finish at 1.030+. I don't see how these could possibly be that high yet not have a thick mouthfeel. But who knows?

    The difference is the sweetness in these beers is from unfermented sugars remaining after fermentation. I would imagine these beers don't ferment for very long...

    New Glarus is my favorite brewery and their fruit beers are indeed excellent, but they are not something I would drink on a regular or even semi regular basis. I get them for special occasions and they fit the bill perfectly for that.

    Haven't had it yet! I've only seen the apple ale on my trips up to WI, but I'll be sure to keep my eyes out for that!

    Exactly. Unfermented sugars = a high final gravity. Is the FG truly high? Or does the fruitiness give it a perceived sweetness, or maybe it's a combo of both? That's my question. Quick someone go degass a sample and take a hydrometer reading! :grinning:

    Did some googling and saw some Belgian Red clone recipes that stated FG anywhere between 1.014 to 1.040

    Do any of those recipes include any type of unfermentable sugar? Unless NG kills the yeast to stop the fermentation in order to keep some sweetness in these beers, I think the only alternative is to use some unfermentable sugar that can't be eaten by the yeast.
