    In the Chicago Tribune.

His first mistake was to stop at the Mars Cheese Castle.

I went there once to see what the hubbub was about. Woodman's has a better cheese selection (not to mention beer.)

Mars Cheese Castle, what a joke. I asked a buddy to pick me up a couple of variety packs on any number of his trips to WI. He ended up stopping at this place and he handed me a receipt for something like $48! Woodman's right down the street is the normal stop and if I recall correctly, I get out of there for $14.99 a 12 pack. As far as worth the trip to WI, yeah, I'd say so. Although I do agree you don't have to leave Chicago to find world class beer. That still doesn't stop all of us from tracking down Russian River, Jester King, Hill Farmstead, and so on. So why not add something a little easier to pick-up like NG.

Say whatever you will about Mars Cheese Castle or Spotted Cow, but anyone who doesn't think Raspberry Tart is worth the trip is full of it. Case closed.

Okay -- back on track, the story wasn't about the Cheese Castle -- he only stopped there because it was easy off and back on. I doubt that they are having trouble turning fresh NG there, no matter what you think of their cheese.

Spot on about Fat Squirrel, but I too would have to disagree with the take on Raspberry Tart.

Key takeaway: Seek out NG Scream IIPA, but always check the date on it before buying.

(I suspect Scream would have a significantly higher BA rating if more people got it fresh. Fantastic beer when fresh and it holds up pretty well for an IIPA, but the way some retailers stock vast quantities of New Glarus, it's entirely possible to end up with some that's way too old if you're not careful.)

Also spot on in regards to both Spotted Cow being WAY over rated and Moon Man being WAY under rated.

Good luck to him if he's hoping the Raspberry Tart will change at all through aging a few months, yet alone a few years

You guys beat me to it!

I don't understand the Spotted Cow hype, although I think it mostly comes from being such a harmless beer that every Wisconsinite can be proud of it. I have some friends at work that shoot me really hard looks when I talk it down, but honestly, there's nothing amazing about it. Will I drink it? Sure. Purchase it over any of my other go-tos? Nah.

Moon Man is awesome fresh, especially on tap. And Cranbic is fantastic, and needs to be a sixer.

Also, I agree with onefiveseven--As soon as he said Raspberry Tart wasn't worth it, I was done.

All in all though, I agreed with the article more than I thought I would, so I guess there's that.

I just had spotted cow a few weeks ago and really enjoyed that beer. For what it is, it is very well made. I assume those who think it is overrated are comparing to their favorite IPA's and RIS's... For the cream ale that it is, it is awesome.

That being said, I wouldn't seek it out like crazy or anything.. But I would gladly grab a sixer of it if I happen to come across it traveling through the state.

Oh, I know, it was the first hit on a Google search. Anyone that has traveled to Germany and has a palate would agree with what New Glarus calls the beer. Spent 4 days in Bamberg very recently.

Most people outside these forums have never had anything other than Spotted Cow, which is kind of sad since it's the least exciting of all the beers they offer.

If you think Budweiser and Spotted Cow are comparable, then you aren't using your tongue correctly.

I'm with you 100% -- NG calls 2W a "Country Lager." Country = Land. Not to mention the second of the 2 Women is Sabine Weyermann, of Weyermann Malting -- in Bamberg, but you can't fault the writer too much for trying to stick to a term that's flooded the internet. Now... if he was focused only on the Two Women, we'd have to call him out.

Waitaminnit -- 4 days in Bamberg is one thing, but you live in Michigan... how are you getting Two Women to compare so distinctly? :astonished::wink:
