    Wisconsinites,

So, I get a ton of requests for New Glarus here in the Twin Cities(and if they were that big of a fan they would know it is only available in Wisconsin). Do you Packer fans get as excited for it as Minnesotites do? I don't see too many threads here. I know they make pretty good beer(Wild Sour #1 Beer of 2013 according to Food and Wine Mag) but is it as much of a whale there? Or is it just that "can't always get what you want" syndrome that happens in much of the beer world?

    XO,
    Your Neighbor

Aside from things like VSB or short runs like Wild Sour, it's about as easy to find as Bud. It's good beer (some better than others) but Hard to get excited over when there's such great availability.

That said, I do buy a few cases of what I like (UffDa and Coffee Stout) so I have enough to hold me over when they stop production for the year.

NG doesn't really make whales. They have this weird idea that beer should be readily available. Even the Thumbprint stuff tends to be pretty available. Even Wild Sour was pretty easy to come by right after it was released.

I've found that some NG stuff gets overlooked because it's not as "extreme" as other stuff, e.g., not ultrahopped or super super sour. They're more about well-balanced brews, which is harder to quantify than high IBU or whatever.

It's gas station and corner store beer.

Some of the best gas station beer though... :grinning:

People don't make a huge fuss because it's always available everywhere. Not crazy styles but every beer is brewed very true to style and I'd say about 90-95% are all done very, very well.

As others have stated, we probably take it for granted due to its wide spread availability. If I moved out of Wisconsin, then I would miss it dearly.

However, I still do get excited when I walk into a random bar and find Moon Man on tap. It's a great beer, especially on draft. And of course, I think we all look forward to the day when the new sour program is fully operational and firing on all cylinders.

Echoing what has already been said, I would miss it if I moved away. True to whatever style they make, but nothing crazy or unheard of. Definitely a solid brewery with a solid plan.

A friend once called Spotted Cow our Bud Light; I reminded him that it's still better than Bud Light.

I travel to Wisconsin for work a few times a year. It's actually kind of fun how there's a few breweries there that bottle but don't really make it out of Wisconsin (NG, O'so, CW). Like a nice little travel perk.

New Glarus is the brewery that makes me say the statement "I just bought this 6 or 4 pack that I really do not care for, huh, why did I not just buy a New Glarus 6 pack." Meaning that about everything they brew you will not regret you have 6 of, you may not love it buy 99 times out of 100 you will like it. The same can be said for Central Waters for me at least. I have never been disappointed by them.

Other breweries are hit and miss, New Glarus is always hit.

How did you like the winter warmer? That was a miss for me. Every thing else has been stellar.

There’s something else I really love about NG – their pricing.

They have a 3 price structure – 6 pack beers, 4 pack beers and 750’s. The price for a 6’er of Spotted Cow is the same as it is for Stout or Bock. They don’t dick around with the price to eek out an extra $0.25 on a beer that might cost a bit more to produce. They cover those extra costs with the profits from their other beers.

They might have an oddball $ here and there for the limited release 500’s but overall, it’s the basic 3

I'll be moving in April and will miss NG dearly. Right now I'm not drinking a ton of it, but I bet when I'm gone, I will cry for it. With that said, I'll be packing a couple cases of their beer to keep me happy.

That's a great point. The fact that their pricing is consistent, and usually the among the cheapest craft options gives them another edge. FYI, at $10 or less a 4 pack, most of the Thumbprint beers are steals compared to what they would cost elsewhere. I paid $8.69 for my four packs of Wild Sour. Most other breweries would put that beer in a bomber and charge $10-15 per bottle.

There’s another thing I love about NG – No Bombers.

I hate bombers (and 750’s); I hate them with every fiber of my being. Whoever came up with the asinine idea that beer, especially huge ABV beer needs to be packaged in a large bottle should be taken out back and beat to death with a 30pack of Milwaukee’s best. As someone who gets up at the asscrack of dawn, I don’t really want to crack 22oz of 15% beverage with my dinner. Plus I’d like to be able to have a cpl different beers over the course of an evening and not be invested into 1 bottle.

I know they put up the 4 750’s but at least those are low abv and not the sort of beer you’d typically want to drink alone anyways, whereas I’d love to crack a bottle of Backyard Rye or Sweet Repute with my meal, but noooooo someone had to stick it in the largest bottle they had in stock. I probably have a good 8-10 cases of large format bottles in the cellar collecting dust as they accumulate faster than I can arrange to share them.

It’s probably only for lack of bottling capacity that we’re not seeing all these limited releases come out in magnums.

< Yes, I do feel better. Gonna go yell at kids to get off my lawn now>

Man, for someone who is as passionate about their hatred for bombers/750's as you are, you make quite a contradicting statement here. That's a shit load of large format bottles for someone who despises them so much.
