I am considering take a side trip (on way to MN via Interstate 94 from NKY) to the New Glarus Brewery - is it worth a trip to their gift shop or whereever they sell beer? I buy and love their beer whenever I stop somewhere thru Wisconsin. Do they sell something you don't see in any beer stores? Any feedback welcomed.
Right now they have their R&D Golden Ale and Cherry stout as the specialties. I didn't find any other stores with Cherry stout yet most still had the barleywine or even the apple ale
I visit Minnesota often and have done the New Glarus stop many times. I think you would enjoy it. I always try to stop there then head over to the Grumpy Troll for lunch (Mt. Horeb). New Glarus isn't too far from Madison and there are plenty of good places yo stop there.
The Cherry Stout is readily available generally throughout the state. I am fairly certain the R&D cannot be purchased anywhere but the brewery, but then again a year or two ago I found some R&D at Discount in Milwaukee.
I was there yesterday and had a wonderful time . They have a very a awesome set over there. Very much worth checking out. In the bottle shop I saw Belgium Red,Golden Ale and Raspberry Tart.
This was one of my most favorite brewery tours. You take the self-guided tour by just wandering in the permissible brewery areas, and you can drink some beer while doing it. Try going on a nice day and sit outside in the sun and drink your beer while looking out over the little town. This is beer nirvana.
Glarner stube is an amazing bar as well. More NG taps then the brewery has and the best cheese curds ive ever had!
I second this. Can't beat the top hill view outside of the brewery, which looks like you're in Switzerland. If you're buying multiple cases, go to Roy's Market in town off of Route 69 as they have a huge selection and a little cheaper than the brewery itself.
I'd stop at Puempel's Olde Tavern www.puempels.com, they have a good selection of Tap and Bottle beers from the Brewery. I agree with stopping at Roy's.
New Glarus is a great little town. The hilltop brewery is great, Puempel's is an awesome pub, and the Glarner Stube has great food. Easy to kill a day (or weekend) there!
Glarner Stube isn't cheap, $9 for cheese curds? $17 for a medicore-tasting schublig? Look elsewhere if you're on a budget.
