X2 on Santa Fe, I really like their Java Stout, and Odell, I like pretty much everything these guys do.

The Odell Red is a fantastic beer but it is a seasonal and won't be released until January. Just a heads up.

Thanks for the help guys and for not bashing on the new guy. Perhaps I'll return a bit later with more beer experience.

I'll look into the Santa Fe ones and the local breweries.

Would it make you feel uncomfortable if I said I wanted to eat your cannolo?

To the OP - as others said, try flights/samplers at craft bars. It's an easy way (on your wallet and liver) to try several styles at once. Aside from that, buy "mix-a-six" packs at your local bottle shop. Also, read the beer style descriptions and reviews on this site and that research will give you a WAG of what you may also enjoy. All are ways to narrow down your sight picture in terms of preferred beer styles.

I was the same way with IPA's at one point. Then I had a Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. Delicious! Goodluck and cheers!

Also Negra Modelo isn't a bad place to start. It's a good example of the "lost" style of a Viennese (sp?) lager. Obviously there are better examples of that style but Negra Modelo isn't that bad for a mass produced beer.

Welcome. I recommend trying an IPA now and then, but starting with beers that you will probably enjoy more now. Hefe Weizens and Wheat beers are a good choice. I have to say that I am very proud to be a BA today as I read all of the posts and everyone above me has been very supportive and helpful. A few of you have remarked that this is what it means to be a beer advocate, and I agree.

I haven't read all of the other posts here (sorry if this has already been said), but if you have a place that will let you make your own 6-pak, perhaps try purchasing some different styles - then when you find a few that you like, you can research those beers on this site to find additional beers in that style, or even additional styles from that brewery. Once you start defining what you really like you ca nalways post out here for additional recommendations. Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey

Fist pump to brplatz for taking the step forward, going out on a limb, and wanting to expand his beer journey. I agree, perhaps some people on BA would not take his post seriously but all of us had to start somewhere - cut the guy some slack. (SN is a great first step if one likes that style of beer) IMO, Brian is moving in the right direction so lets get behind him. We need to help spread the word and support our brothers and sisters looking to expand their beer journey, if not, what's the purpose of this website? What I love most, even though I've been at this for a long time, I still learn each and every week.

I'm brand new to BA, too, but not to B.
I would recommend you dive into the deep end of the IPA pool, whether you like them currently or not.
I think it's like the piano of the drinking world.
If you can play with IPA's, then you can play anything else out there.

I would say try a Ranger or Saranac White IPA's.
    then move on to Two-Hearted.
    then Firestone Walker.

and hey man, I love a good cold can of Modelo on a paddling day...to hell with what people think.

Don't listen to this. The only person who isn't taking you seriously and who is judging you because of your favorites is otispdriftwood himself.

The reality is that the beers you are enjoying are looked at as "gateway beers" to many on this site. In the sense that, they get you off of Bud Light and Coors Light and open you up to craft brews. Many on this site then leave behind the Killian's, Blue Moon, Shock Top type stuff after that. But if you like them, so be it! Enjoy them and enjoy them a lot.

I will suggest to you a few beers that you may like though. Give Allagash White, Anchor Steam and Brooklyn Brown Ale a try. All three are widely available and I think you'll like them.

What a shitstorm I got for my comment. But I did say there's nothing really wrong if you really like them.

I guess I shall say that I perhaps was not aware of the vast difference in quality of beers until reading here. Which I am very willing to learn to appreciate!

Thanks for the support and I plan to pick up a mix-a-six tonight for the weekend.

I actually wish we had the room to brew far more lagers, but alas, we only have room for 2 right now and we will be down to only our Pilsner soon, though I love that beer. Daniel and I do love lagers and if it were 100% up to us, they would be half of what we serve. Alas, IPA takes up about 75% of our fermentation capacity.

    Gotta pay the bills

Hope the success of your IPA gives you enough margin to keep producing lagers.
