Yea man, I've just never loved Modern. Yea it's a decent pie. But I don't think it's on the same level as the other 3. I haven't been there in a few years. And yes. Nebco stuff on draught does beat Pepe's Genessee Cream option..

As for burgers...I enjoy Louis Lunch. Definitely have to bring your own ketchup. Prime 16 has a very good burger. But nothing, not in New Haven or anywhere in the world will ever beat Yankee Doodle. Best burger I've ever had. Miss that place..

Good call on Dimatteo's. Best calzone I ever had. The ham Calzone is their specialty and it is fantastic. Of course i haven't been there in 10 years. Time for a road trip.

    Cheers,

    Doug

I miss the Doodle so much. My father was, at one time, the hamburger eating champion, and was on the plaque. My grandfather started bringing me there when I was like 5...

Best whole wheat pizza I've ever had. Very good regular pies as well, but I don't even get them anymore because the whole wheat is so damn good.

Sadly, I never did stop into Yankee Doodle before it closed. My vote for best burger in the city goes to Contois Tavern, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a place to take one's mother-in-law.

I've still never gone to a place where the burgers come out with half melted butter on top. So good. 2 cheeseburgers, a pig in a blanket, and a chocolate shake was my go to meal. Haha can't eat like that anymore..

Dude someone was telling me about Contois a couple days ago. Never even heard of it. They said something like you need a password or something to get in?? I wanted to check it out this weekend..

No password, but I've definitely been turned away when the owner wasn't in the mood for a new customer. It's a strange place, with terrible beer, but their burgers (usually available at lunch only) are to die for. A few of my friends used to live across the street from there, and for a while we'd get lunch there every Tuesday. I believe a burger and a pint of Bud heavy was $7.

    Ahhh....ol' Yankee Doodle.

    Shame they aren't around anymore.

    Cheers

My best friend lives across the street from Contois. I've only been there once...didn't get any hostility, but no friendliness either. They weren't serving burgers at the time, though :slight_frown:

Contois is the best burger I ever had. Budweiser never tasted so good as when paired with a Contois burger. We once had 28 drafts and seven burgers and the bill was under thirty dollars. When the old man owned the place it was much tougher to get in. That was over 20 years go. The son, Bill Jr, is much more customer friendly.

the quality of the meat at louis lunch is insanely great. Sucks if some of you don't appreciate that. There is no way I'd want ketchup hiding the taste of that burger.

As for the pizza debate, I used to go to all of the big four regularly (been to zuppardi's once as well, definitely a great pie) and every time Sally's wins in a landslide for me. Whether its their tomato pie, garlic, cheese, or the potato pie with rosemary they are my favorite versions across the board. Don't get me wrong, all are great but if given a choice I'd go sally's every time. Just sucks they don't do traditional take-out. Man I miss my new haven pizza nights : ( have a slice for me someone....

So pretty much for Contois, just get there for lunch? Anything else I should know? Tomorrow afternoon a good time?

It's tough to predict, but I would expect Saturday afternoon to be a good time to grab a burger there. Enjoy!

I'm definitely a Modern homer, too. It helps that I live a block away, though

So I took your advice and gave Modern another shot last night. I hadn't been in like 3 years, and the last few times I went, the pizza was burnt to shit and just not very good. But last night....Fuck. That was easily better than Pepe's. I feel defeated. My world is upside down right now. I don't know what's right anymore.

Haha, terrific. As it happens, sandman3479 and I wound up heading to Modern last night as well after sharing a couple brews at NEBCO. It was indeed delicious, as usual.

    Cheers!

I lived on olive and state for two years. No better location to be in the middle of the pizza action. I used to love ordering takeout from modern on a sat night. It didn't matter how busy they were it would be ready in 15 mins
