Man, I am excited about the Mandarina Ipa they are releasing in the summer. Crank Arm did a Unicycle Ipa (single hop) with the Mandarina last year that was awesome. From what I understand it's an older German hop that was underutilized until these tropical IPA's became popular. It had big tangerine flavors and even had grape flavors similar to grape flavored Big League Chew.......so good!!!

Went to Highland yesterday and was pleased to find that when you order the new Highland IPA in their tasting room, that it is served in the proper glassware for an IPA, specifically a logo etched 19oz Spiegelau IPA glass with room for a nice head.

This glassware is much more expensive than the common 'shaker' pint glass, but demonstrates Highland is serious about the customer experience, and recognizes the importance of the proper glassware based on the style. Sierra Nevada also utilizes this style of glassware for their Torpedo IPA.

OBTW, Highland IPA is a winner in my book. My rating is a 4.65! Will be a common sight in my refrigerator. It is also the first Highland year round core offering that I will go to the tasting room for. My visits to Highland are typically for select seasonals and their small batch offerings.

Anything is better than a pint glass, but I hate those IPA glasses. Just give me a tulip.

I prefer a tulip for just about every style.

Indeed. Or a teku but I do own some IPA glasses and enjoy them when I pour IPAs on draft at home

It's good and I like that Highland is getting with the times, but it's not as good as, say, Oskar Blues IPA. Still, kudos to Hollie Stevens for making a west coast style IPA that can hang with other respectable examples.

I'm surprised that people like Oskar Blues' IPA. Not good IMO and definitely does not sell well at my normal place in Raleigh. Pinner is much better.

I'm looking forward to seeing some draft of the Highland one. Kind of hard to really judge a new IPA until you have a few different batches of it and both bottle and draft. I liked it the first time I had it.

I'm with you on this one. When both are available, I'll take Dales over the IPA every time.

I have a soft spot for highland I'll have to pick this up when it hits my area.

Personally, I really enjoy Oskar Blues IPA and it's my go-to from them now and a top canned IPA for me.
Have a Highland IPA in the fridge- look forward to trying it today.

I find the teku a little too fragile (easy to knock over) for everyday drinking. I have a couple of the IPA glasses but I almost never get them out.

Yep, that's how I broke my Haw River one. Was my own fault for leaving it on a hard surface in the first place, but I decided they aren't for me and my clumsy self after that. I have a Teku pint glass now but only use it once in a while to avoid another break.

That clarity. Wow! This is a tasty NC IPA. Nice work, Highland.

I credit Oscar Wong and Highlands for really starting the craft beer movement in Asheville, and also have a soft spot for Highlands, and I am personally thrilled they are expanding their offerings and bringing out new seasonal and year round brews.

We visit the brewery about once a month, but not for their regular production brews. Sometimes the seasonals, but primarily for the small batch stuff, and they have even stepped that up. They used to have 2 sometimes 3 on the small batch board, but now it's more like 6, and their new seasonals and year round offerings.

I've had several for a couple of years now, and use them constantly, and find they are a durable as a regular shaker pint, where the lip seems to chip. At home I haven't had a beer out of a regular pint glass in a long time, glassware does make a difference!

I completely agree that glassware makes a difference and I most definitely do not use a shaker pint... I have been using the same Piraat tulip/snifter for about the last 5 years. The teku is just a touch too tall and easy for me to knock over.

Picked up a six pack yesterday because of this thread. I thought it was a very well executed west coast IPA at a good price point. Reminds me of Sucks with slightly more bitterness. Good substitute when Pernicious isn't around.
