So we had the new neighbors over tonight for a drink, I asked the husband what he likes and he replied "whatever you have that isn't hoppy". (This isn't going to work) So I had Green Flash West Coast IPA and Souther Tier Hop Sun, Hop Sun it is. He drank it slowly, but finished it, for which I was proud. He later commented that he mostly drinks bud lights. What are some good gateway beers I should stock up on?

Elliot Ness and Fat Tire were my 2 gateway beers. Both are not so hoppy but well crafted beers

SNPA. Work your way up from there.

Forgot Dale's Pale Ale. That might work too.

I would say let him drink what he likes. That's not saying if he comes over to hand him a Bud, but I know from experience some people just like what they like and will not be converted.

That said, stock up on less hoppy Pales and maybe stuff like Victory Prima Pils.

Lately I've had the best luck introducing macro drinkers to a kolsch or hefeweizen. The clean finish they're used to, but with full flavor. I'd go with the Germans.

I get where the OP is coming from; new neighborhood, nice neighbor who seemingly likes trying different beers (or at least is open to the idea). While I'm really not all for, hunting them down and shoving our craft beer down their throat, there's a good opportunity here. Don't be pushy, tune into some flavors he likes, etc. I think in time with the right approach you can let him try different things, but in the interim, let him drink what he enjoys. When the situation is right, show him some approachable craft beer.

Brooklyn Summer Ale in cans. The can will make it more familiar looking for him.

Definitely agree with this. Also perhaps some type of amber.

You could always push him into the deep end and hand him a Hunahpu or Rochefort 10 :grinning:

It's been said but Victory Prima Pils is a great gateway beer and hell, it's a great beer even for a seasoned craft drinker. I'd also recommend Sweet Action by Sixpoint since you are on the east coast.

Stop being a craft beer missionary and let the guy drink whatever he wants.

I'm never 'disappointed' when my neighbor who works for a few different wineries in my city, brings over wine.

So... not trying to be a jerk here, but... if your neighbor only eats whole wheat bread are you going to stock up on that? He only drinks skim milk but you like 2%? He prefers grapefruit juice but you like orange? And what about your other neighbors' personal tastes? Do you cater to them too?

I mean, it's really nice of you to want to be a good host, really, it is. But I'd say stock up on whatever beer you like—and if your neighbor doesn't want it, he can either (1) bring his own, (2) drink something else, or (3) suffer silently with that hoppy crap you inexplicably enjoy. After all, your fridge is only so big.

Another vote for Sierra Summerfest. Great for the craft drinker and not too much for a BMC guy. Had a 12er at my last party and had a few BMC'ers mention how much they enjoyed it. I'm sure Prima Pils and Brooklyn Summer cans would get the same reaction.

he is probably annoyed that his new neighbor is gonna try and shove stuff down his throat after being told he doesnt like it. just buy what you like and if he wants to try one, great, if not, ooohh well.

Northcoast Scrimshaw. Dude at the bar said he was looking for something lighter, so I suggested this brew for him. He enjoyed it so much much, that he recommended it for his group of friends. They all seemed to enjoy it (They chugged it down pretty quickly if that's any indictation). Also, if this helps, my brother who thinks Budweiser is the shit, enjoys brown ales, ambers, and scotch ales, and my dad who stocks himself with Coors Light, goes for the german and/or belgian wheat beers at craft beer bars.
