Great Divide Brewing (Denver, CO) has been in the brewing business for 19 years. Each year, Great Divide celebrates with an anniversary release – typically a wood-aged imperial IPA. Things don’t stay the same forever. The 2013 celebration looks to use birch syrup. Birch sap makes a great sweetener for pancakes & waffles, even beer.

19TH ANNIVERSARY ALE isn’t just a wood-aged ale. It’s a compass—a reminder of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Brewed with pure birch syrup and aged on birch wood, this beer embraces reverential tradition and revolutionary innovation. As we celebrate our 19th year, we hope yorill join us for the road ahead.

Style: (w/ Birch Syrup, Birch Wood Aged)
    Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft

    10.2% ABV

Did they steal that description straight from ST's new Compass?

So is it an IPA like previous anniversary ales they've done, or just an American Strong?

Yeah, I'm curious about the base beer as well, not just the aging.

Have they used birch wood in previous releases or is this a brand new thing?

Hmm. I'm envisioning birch beer mixed with -- well -- beer. Sounds kinda awesome. The last few of these have kicked some serious ass.

I would imagine it is an IPA or else it's going to be really really sweet, especially if it's a barleywine or stout.
