As I am sure many people on here are, I am borderline obsessed with sour beers. I have had dozens of belgian sours from the famous/popular breweries that make them. I have had several RR wild ales, and if I am anywhere that has something sour, I usually am drawn to that first. I am looking for some smaller breweries that would be worth the trip that specialize in making them.

There are some wish list ones that I would like to visit at some time:
    Russian River
    Jester King
    The Rare Barrel

    Parameters:

I live in central NJ but go to Philly often and NYC sometimes. I would like for it to be within a day trip distance to take the drive on a weekend. If there are others that are not close enough, please let me know and I will add it to my wish list.

OEC Brewing in Oxford, CT. About 2.5 hours from Trenton (for example). Open every Saturday; check their website!

Big Alice Brewing in Queens. I haven't been or tasted their beers, but their website shows a number of sours. I'm planning to visit in a week, so I can give you an update after that.

That is one I have to add. I have had some of their stuff and one collaboration with HF.

I have not heard of OEC. I will have to check them out.

In your region a few come to mind, albeit some are not new and don't produce strictly sour beer.

    Allagash
    Bullfrog
    Cambridge
    Tired Hands
    Captain Lawrence
    Hill Farmstead
Wicked Weed (maybe a drive, but I've heard nothing less than superb)

The west coast and northwest have the most of the sour & wild beer newer breweries it seems.

Yes, they opened earlier this year to rave reviews. Some of their stuff occasionally makes it to NYC on tap. I have yet to hit the brewery, but I hope to in the next few weeks.

The Captain may be my local brewery, which it is, but their sour stuff is only extremely rarely available. I certainly wouldn't drive from central Jersey to Captain Lawrence expecting to try a bunch of sours.

I have had several Indigo Imp beers when I visited Cleveland last December. They were all interesting. Some were more successful than others, but all were worth trying. You can pick them up in shops as easily as going to the brewery, though.

They love Brett and most of their beers tend to have a drier sour taste than a straight up pucker. Probably one of the most skilled breweries in terms of using wild yeast. Pretty expensive, awesome.

If no-one has mentioned it yet, make the trip to California for beer some time. Make especially sure to visit Firestone Walker Barrelworks in Buellton and Russian River to scratch your sour itch.

I had the chance to get OEC Tempus Blend #2 (a sour saison) on tap in Stamford and it was awesome. I had one three nights in a row!

Being from NC, I have been to WW multiple times and now they have the Funkatorium. Both are awesome places to visit and really close together. Honestly you can't beat an Asheville vacation... Amazing food and so many craft breweries it is ridiculous.

As you're probably aware in Philly you can buy bottles of Russian River and Jester King and sometime find it on tap. I don't know about Rare Barrel...

There are a few Philly area breweries who dabble in sours, like Tired Hands and Round Guys come to mind, but it's not all they do. Weyerbacher in Easton has been making sours for a few years now too, but they seem to be a little hit or miss [and Weyerbacher had some recent issues with cross-contamination souring other beers that shouldn't have been sour...but maybe you would be OK with that! :grinning:]
