Seems they are going bigger than even Founders. Not a fan of the Founders destination brewery/brewpub, so I am likely not to enjoy this either. But we shall see. I can kind of see the angst now among the other establishments in Minneapolis over this plan.

What? I challenge you to a duel.

Founders tap room is what I imagine the entrance to heaven to look like. Took a four day tour of Michigan & would have happily stayed there for the duration!

I accept your duel good sir. My tour of Michigan took me to such places as Short's. That is what a brewpub/brewery should be IMHO. I would be happy staying there for four days while I guzzeled Backwoods Bastard and All-Day in order to exit Founders quickly. But Surly is much bigger than that nowadays I suppose.

I always assumed they would pick somewhere in MPLS. Seems like Omar and Ryback get along pretty well, and Ryback showed strong support along the way. I would have liked to see St Paul however near the campus would be a pretty good spot for college kids/bike up traffic.

I'll get there someday, probably a slow weekday about 2 years after they open and the hype dies down. I wish them the best, but I'm not one for big crowds. I would have thought they would pull the trigger more quickly to get the new brewery up and running, when they were riding the crest of the wave. With the influx of new breweries in the TCities, by the time the new location opens Surly may just be one of several top tier breweries in the area.

A place like this means they will not be one of several. I don't even think the Founders comparison is apt - I loved that brewery, but they pretty much just serve pizza and pretzels. They have a big live music area, but the whole location couldn't be more than 3 acres. With Linda at the head and this much space, the only place I've been to that can compare is Stone, and their facility is amazing. It is also constantly rated as one of the best in the world.

It is tempting to be annoyed by the hype and size, but Surly makes some damn good beer and I for one am excited that they'll take up such a prominent place in the Minnesota beer scene.

Hmmm, so I guess this means they probably wont be building it in Lakeland like I had so selfishly hoped. Damn

Remember this will be their main brewery. They will need a lot of space for shipping/receiving, as well as keg storage, delivery vehicle parking, etc... And parking for the public (per Minneapolis regulations roughly 135 spots based on the capacity numbers given in the interview).

If you build it they will come. The market is exploding, and the yuppies and common folk are jumping on the band wagon for the hometown product. Because of this the place will always be packed regardless of how big it is. I'll frequent it no matter where it is but I would love to see it near campus.

Yeah, they said this is 100 year decision or something of that nature. They are going to want to make sure they have enough space so they don't have do this again any time soon.

Wherever they build, it will be interesting to see how the taste of the beer will change due to a new source of water.
