A 12 bottle shipper from MA to Oregon or California would cost me about $35 on average.

I guess we pack a box differently  im willing to pay more rather than have broken bottles.

Costs vary as well. If i ship one bomber across the country it ain't gunna be for four dollars. Putting a blanket number of 3-4 dollars a beer is inaccurate.

I sent out 5 beers to Ca this week about $22 a 14 cube box, so right at $4 to ca, if it was ny figure $18 for the same box and under $4. It's about right I rarely send more than 6 beers.

My shipment set me back >$20. Considering I sent 5 bottles, shipping cost was not too steep at all.

One thing you definitely want to do is get an account at either FedEx or UPS, if you haven't already of course. You get discounted shipping and it just makes things easier.

Also, cavedave's alewatcher post is crucial. It should be mandatory reading for any trader.

I have the benefit of working for Staples which has a ship center. I may hold the box up a little bit when i'm weighing to get the price down a bit :flushed:

How long must one be a member before he has the ability to respond to beer trading posts?

How long do you have to wait, and how long should you wait, are different numbers for sure.

While that is a valid point cavedave it strays from the question. I do agree with you that before I or anyone trades they should have to wait a period of time and should research trading practices, following the various links to awesome articles on this thread and having read up and researched many trade forums here on BA one can gather a wealth of information that will make them a valued trader.

Now in response to what you said, do you have a number for how long new members (which includes myself) whould have to wait?

I voted for 3 months when the topic was discussed, not sure how long is mandatory.

In addition to some time requirement, the person should make some contribution to the site as well, posting on any of the forums. Personally, I would not trade with new/new-ish members with 0 beer karma, 0 beers, 0 places, 0 posts, 0 likes. I've seen users with those stats put up ISO:FT threads.

For me, it's more about their contribution. For example, there are brand new members that are fairly active on the forums, and based on their posts, I wouldn't have second thoughts trading with them. On the flip side, based on posts, there are people I would never trade with!

I guess I got lucky with my trade being so early in by BA career

I would be totally fine with waiting 3 months or longer, I just wish there was some type of guidline or tract that one such as myself could follow to know that I'm going in the right direction.

I totally get where you're coming from mcraft. I absolutely agree that one should contribute to BA/ the society before one can reap the benefits or rewards of being part of the said society.

I look forward to being more involved in this BA community and getting to know everyone here.

    Cheers

The recipient of my trade has successfully received his package without any broken bottles! If he likes all the bottles I sent then it's a successful 1st trade in my book!

Congrats man. Like so many others have already mentioned, trading is indeed a slippery slope, so enjoy the ride!
