...and wondering what are the go-to places as far as local microbreweries and bars/eateries go? It'd also be awesome if you guys could link some VA specific or regional breweries that are worth checking out. Having moved from PA and it's backwards alcohol laws, I'm sure there's lots of good stuff I haven't had from south of the Mason Dixon Line.

Breweries in the Fredericksburg area are

Wild Run (just north in Stafford) in a Camp Ground.. little weird...beers over priced but decent
    in Fredericksburg
Adventure - Beers were ok lots of selection
Spencer Devon - Downtown little upscale for me beer average
Maltese - Firefighter themed, fairly new brewery I enjoyed my visit
Blue & Gray - The old man in the area. Its ok
Battlefield @ the Pub - May or may not have a house brew on tap. Lots of taps but mostly Macro crap.
    Rusty Beaver - NO NO

    IMO

One good thing about Fredricksburg is you are about half way in between Richmond and DC which both have plenty of options. I also suggest making a trip out to Charlottesville. This fall would be a great time to hit Blue Mountain, Devils Backbone and Wild wolf. All three are about 30 minutes from Charlottesville off the same road with some nice views of the mountains.
