I haven't had any of those listed but what I have tried from the Abbey has been pretty good and worth revisiting. Most of those get good ratings and Red Poppy has been a long time want of mine . . . hope to find some around. I did see Devotion on the shelf this past weekend.

All of them are good, but those 375s are $17. I bought a few yesterday, but won’t buy often at that price.

Anyone had any quality/infection issues with JO’s Oro or BB Oro (from August 2017 release)? Had a trade partner say he had both last night. Regular was terrible and BB was showing early signs of infection in his opinion. Just trying to determine if this is an off bottle or something more as I have additional bottles cellaring. Thanks!

Looks like a few other Untappd users reporting something similar for BA 2017 but lots of people saying theirs is OK. I'll open one this weekend and report back.

May want to post in JO's thread as well as this isn't really new to OH.

What are you doing aging these beers anyway? Don't age infused or barrel aged beers. Throw em out, along with your victim card.

A bit harsh considering BA Oro was released 4 months ago today. I think there was even an official Jackie Os sanctioned event yesterday selling bottles. People bitching about beers that are a couple years old are one thing, asking about this doesn’t seem unreasonable.

Doesn't seem like he was planning on opening them soon at all though. When are people gonna finally start treating these delicate beers properly? They don't seem to have a problem opening IPAs while they are fresh.

It baffles me. Like, Jackie O's didn't take the time getting the spices just right for the perfect balance of nuance just so everyone can go dumb it all down by aging it away.

Sometimes people's eyes are bigger than their stomachs, and they may buy a few more bottles than they can drink off the jump. It's not every night people feel like a strong barrel aged stout.

And despite your protestations, it is relatively widely accepted, at least amongst our community, that barrel aged beers and strong ales like ~12% stouts are often cellared.

Even with the increase in production, these kinds of beers don't come out frequently, especially if there is one in particular you know you enjoy, like Oro. There's usually an 11 month gap between the next time you see it so it makes sense for people to pick up a few bottles for a rainy day. I mean, many of these beers are already ~12 months old before bottling, so 4-6 more months in a sealed bottle shouldn't cause a drastic dropoff, and normally doesn't.

First of all they don't barrel age beers with spices and coffee and such, that's added after. Plus it's not simply time or age that "infects" beer. If indeed any of this Jackie O's beers picked up anything from spending time in the barrel the negatives effects of that are only brought out by age/time since being removed from the barrel.

So just because the beer has been barrel aged before purchase, doesn't mean it's "already an old product" and some how therefore should be aged further.

Further, I think this community knows full well that adjuncts do not hold up in the bottle over time.

Additionally, I don't see how buying so much more beer than you can't drink it all isn't your own fault. No one stocks up on several gallons of milk then raises hell when it spoils because they bought a years supply in one go.

Besides all that, I don't know how much more simple it could get.

Jackie O's beers taste good fresh. Sometimes they don't taste good aged. I don't know where all the surprised reactions keep coming from.

This is what I'm guilty of. I don't intend on aging beers but I tend to buy more than I can drink quickly. That, and I don't have a good setup in my beer closet. Most of these beers are scattered throughout several boxes so I can't easily see what all I have. Bottles get forgotten!

I think it's a little ironic, that I got some Port and Lost Abbey stuff from a blind beer trade, and then it hits the shelves here immediately!

Yep, the annual Lizardville event was last night. They had LOTS of last year's BA beers for sale for that.

    Last year's bottles:

    BA Oil
    BA Coffee Oil
    BA Oro
    Chiron's Flame
    Cuvee 11
    BA Skipping Stone
    BA Wood Burner (2015?)
    BA Black Maple
    Champion Ground

So all of those are already minimum of 3-4months old and many a lot older. I personally have had great luck with JO's BA beers with age, but just wanted to point out even though they say drink it fresh, they're selling plenty of it months and sometimes years later.

JO's have had reps there each year for it, so at the very least its a collab around doing the events.

I don't want this to come off the wrong way either, just stating it. I'm personally in the camp that if a beer is done well, you'll never have a problem after being properly stored for a year+, but if a beer has problems out the gate, it's just going to get worse with time. 99% of all the JO's I've had "aged" have been fantastic and the very few I've had issues with (gushers or off flavors) have shown major signs of it within weeks of purchase.

I cleared that post because I read back that this time around was sanctioned.

I like holding onto my Jackie o bottles to share. I never just throw back a Jackie bottle alone these days. I don’t buy them often so when I do I like to make it count for something.

How does Lizardville selling old bottles make it the correct thing to do?

It doesn't make much sense to argue for aging these types of beers right after another batch of reports of off bottles.
