It didn't mesh well with the others, but also personally, I just didn't like it at all. Tasted off with a sort of pineapple tartness that I didn't enjoy paired with the smokiness that was too ashy for me.

Gotcha, I saw a bottle still sitting on a shelf a few days ago and thought about trying it, but didn’t pull the trigger. I really like Woodburner for the minimal smokiness in it, so I was hoping this had the same minimal level of smoke.

I was about to do the same, then realized it was on draft. Really glad I had the opportunity to get a sample, because I couldn't even finish that.

And I love Woodburner too, it was one of the first BB bottles by them I could tolerate. I haven't revisited it since that first time, need to do that soon.

FWIW, I found the smoke to be even more minimal in the bottle I had of Athens to Athens than it is in Woodburner, and in fact my main reaction was that I wished it was more present if anything (and since it was before the most recent release, it just made me really want Woodburner to come back out). I could see it standing out more if I had it side by side with the other barleywines though.

This year's woodburner has more smoke than previous releases.

    That's funny.

The type of people who post here tend to do that type of thing. I guess you could say we're special?

Not sure if it’s still common to see it around, but Heinen’s in Middleburg Heights had a few CBS bombers on the shelf when I stopped there at lunch, in case anybody is still after some.

Most heinens had some held back by the distributor. I got some last month in bay village. Surprisingly, took a while to sell out.

Is it really that surprising though? It’s a $25 bomber and the hype has worn off.

Mustard Seed in Solon still has KBS bombers sitting in the cooler.

Wondering if there were any thoughts on Crafted's Planet of the Grapes? Finally had some on draft today. It strikes me just how much hype PB&J meads like Garagiste's gets by comparison. I found Crafted's to be more drinkable--the carbonation was slightly more present, making it less viscous, syrupy and gloppy than the rye Reboog I had. And the flavors really hit the mark, although I'm not sure that's actually a difficult feat, or anything to get all hot and bothered over, but the trade game is what it is, looking to tackle the next childhood memory concept.

In terms of quality, I didn’t even put this one in the same stratosphere as the Reboogs or even Superstition PBJC (personal opinion). However, in all fairness, Planet of the Grapes is a different approach

Granted the barrel aging in some of those adds complexity, but I guess I just prefer the lighter feel. I would also love to jump inside the brains of some of these mead producers to see their true thoughts on the developments in the mead game the past couple years. It seems the public has a lot less interest in understanding mead and the nuances between the different types of traditional mead and mead ingredients, versus the intense desire for flavored meads. While the beer community still has a robust culture around traditional and non-flavored beers, in spite of the still overwhelming push for flavored pastry or juicy style brews.

I guess I was speaking more to the non-BA Reboogs in comparison to Planet of the Grapes. Just the viscosity, richness and complexity are on different levels for me. However if I grab a Reboog to drink, I’m doing so with a different mindset versus grabbing a Planet of the Grapes. Still vs. carbonated, high ABV vs “sessionable”.

I agree that the mead landscape is changing and we are seeing a lot more “pastry mead”. As long as some of the top producers in the game continue to also make awesome traditionals and standard melomels (in addition to the more adventurous stuff), I’m good with having all of the options.

@tcorder219 I apologize if this has been asked and answered in this thread already (it probably has)... but what is the story with the "volumes" for insane wanderer? I'm hoping the recipe doesn't change... does it?
