You can damn near bomb proof the box by doubling up on the box. I do this on bottles I cannot replace, and I reduce the xtras so I can use more padding. First priority are the main trade bottles to arrive safely not jam in a ton of xtra stuff, although I try and send at least 3 on every trade, depends on space. I've used shippers before and they are as safe as it gets, but IMO they are noisy.

I never sleep well during growler trades, but how else am I going to share all this Bodhi?

Glad everything made it safely OP!

Now the return box has been delivered, but I'm at work. Looking forward to opening it when I get home.

Nothing like coming home to a box full of beer. That feeling never gets old. Lots of good advice here. You care, which is why you posted here, and that is a good thing to.

I still get nervous every time I walk into FedEx with a box full of beer. I've shipped some bottles that there is no way I could ever replace, and when that happens you can never pack them good enough. You learn tricks and techniques from people as you receive boxes, and in the end you will work out your own technique.

As a new trader I recommend checking out the LIFs. When I first started there were soon Noob ones going on and they were a great way to introduce me to some new beers and I was amazed at how generous people could be.

Techniques I've learned in the trading game.

You can never use too much bubble wrap
Use a large contractors type trash bag to line the box.
I also buy a box of ziploc bags at the buck store to place every bottle in its own bag
Packing all bottles upright, it reduces sloshing liquid sound
If packed correctly (double boxed) a 12 wine bottle box is as effective as a styro shipper

I use that "12 bottle wine box in a box" trick all the time. Surprisingly, I've never received a box where someone used it. I thought I was the only genius that figured that one out. ;-)

Another trick I like is using the medium sized "free" fed ex boxes to hold bombers or sealed empty as cushioning. I often put one of those sealed boxes underneath the wine box or a couple beside to provide shock absorbtion.

I've got a Southern Tier Pumking box that should work that way. My trade partner used a padded FedEx envelope for a bomber. Thought that was clever, padding and spill protection in one.
