Hello all. A few friends and I will be heading to New Ulm this weekend for Oktoberfest. Does anyone know if there's a quality beer bar in New Ulm serving the Deschutes, Odells and Surlys of the world? Or a liquor store where I can buy these breweries offerings to bring home? New Ulm doesn't have any even close to recent ratings on here, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not really, you will be hard pressed to find that stuff in New Ulm, I was just there.

I don't think you will have much success finding those beers in a bar, but you might be able to find them at Liquor Mart, or Cash Wise.

New Ulm is pretty much stocked with Schell's beer, naturally though since Schell's Brewery is located there. Schell's Emerald Rye is pretty decent.

Mankato is only like 40 mins away, if you are looking for a liquor store that you can get all the goods at, the MGM in 'Kato is pretty darn good.

Man, kind of burn on Schell's. Do you also go to Bend, Oregon and ask where they sell Millstream?

It depends a lot on what route you're taking, but this place is a better than average watering hole for the Greater Mankato area. In New Ulm proper you have a lot of August Schell placements, out at the bars you might find a few bottles of E.P.A. and Fat Tire as well... But yeah, I'm just not getting the impression that that particular burg is any kind of Craft Beer© "Mecha". It never has been (not since they had the Pete's contract, anyway. :sunglasses:)

Local retail has a similar mix as you'll find anywhere from the Cities to Rochester (although I've found a few gems along the way, so Cash Wise and Liquor Mart are indeed worth a look if'n ya ask me. And ya did, so 'der!)

EDIT: Coming up from Iowa I'd imagine that you'll find even less of a varied selection, so you might consider saving your pennies for when you make your next trip up to DBL, FF, etc etc.

Go to the Kaiserhoff and eat a bunch of sauerkraut balls with "BBQ sauce." Drink a couple mugs of Oktoberfest and then a couple of more of Emerald Rye. Dance with the Narren on top of the swimming pool at the Holiday Inn.

It's all good and there are plenty of other times and places for Deschutes, Odell and Surly.

But, like the others have posted...... Mankato

It's New Ulm. No better place on the planet to drink Schell's. Don't do it just because when-in-Rome, do it because local beer is awesome and Schell's is awesome local beer.

Hit the B&L if you want the best selection of Schell's taplines.
