...and looking for references on nearby bottle shops, craft bars, etc. (I've searched "places," it's been helpful). We're staying at The New Yorker Hotel on 8th Ave, at the corner of 34th/35th. Already planning on checking out Rattle n Hum, Pony Bar, Gingerman, and The Beer Distributors. Wondering if there are any other places within walking distance worth checking out.Thanks.
You've got it covered for places within walking distance. Personally I think Rattle n Hum is nowhere near the bar it used to be. I'd just stick to the Gingerman. Hop on the blue line down to West 4th and check out Blind Tiger. Shopping wise, Whole Foods Bowery and New Beer are the best in Manhattan. Whole Foods Columbus Circle and Tribeca are not bad either and both are on the blue line Cheers
If you plan on shopping -- I agree with the above poster on New Beer and Whole Foods (bowery). I'd recommend hitting New Beer first, then Whole Foods (Bowery) - walking distance from one another. When I made my first trip to both places, we hit Whole Foods first - then New Beer. We noticed some prices were $2+ cheaper at New Beer and the saving could add up to an extra beer or two. And brother in law went to Gingerman couple weeks ago and loved it -- kept sending me the play by play of every beer he had.
Hop on the Queens bound(uptown) E train at Penn station and hit Alewife in Long island City. It's six stops to the Court Square/23 Ely station and a 5 -10 minute walk. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26900
Especially if you're going to go down to WF Bowery / New Beer, look into Top Hops. Generally excellent selection on draft and in bottles.
The Pony Bar is my favorite spot in midtown. You might stop by Beer Authority on 40th and 8th, see what they have on. It's not the greatest spot, a little touristy, but they sometimes have something good on offer. It's certainly close enough...you could pop by on the way to (or back from) the Pony Bar.
Blind Tiger for another beer spot. Let me know if you want some food recommendations. Blue Line? This isnt Chicago..
Only problem is A/C/E do not all stop at the same places - minor details when trying to get somewhere.. Anyways - back to the beer discussion. Blind Tiger!
I'd welcome some food recommendations. I've been to NY before and hit up some of the "touristy" spots: Grimaldi's, Lombardi's, Katz, and Carnegie Deli to name a few.
