Speaking of All Togethers, @locoformavs had threatened over the long weekend that he would send me some new ones local to him, along with a couple others... And boy did he come through. Three new All Togethers, along with damn fine company. Thanks again Logan, I hope to see in you a couple months
@azuelke I have a couple of questions regarding the Newbies 2020 Summer 6er. Sorry if any of these questions have been answered elsewhere. When will our targets be assigned? Rules state "As with past blind BIFs, each shipper will provide their target with six (or so) individually wrapped beers (bottle, can, growler, etc). Each of these packages will be tagged with the order and/or date on which they should be opened, and each day the target will open the designated package for that day, take a photo and post it on BA, and I guess drink some beer." By blind BIF does that mean sender is to remain anonymous even after target receives beer? Does this mean target should drink beer blind and then open to see what it is? Beer is to be delivered to target by June 20th but drinking does not commence until June 29th. Is delivery the 20th necessary or if a beer could be included that would push delivery past the 20th but still be there before the 29th is this OK?
as far as the blind beers go you would wrap bottles, cans or whatvere you send so person cannot tell what they are and they will drink them on the marked day and post to thread just makes it a little more interactive is all.. example
I get that but the rules state "each day the target will open the designated package for that day, take a photo and post it on BA, and I guess drink some beer." so I assume that when we drink the beer it has already been unwrapped and we know what we are drinking. Just wanted clarification since I have seen some places where people where supposed to drink the beer blind, comment on it and then unwrap it to see what it is.
"Just wanted clarification since I have seen some places where people where supposed to drink the beer blind, comment on it and then unwrap it to see what it is." This is what you would do, open still wrapped, pour and blind taste/review then reveal
When you get your box @Scottsbeer , it will have wrapped beers in it and they should be labeled - Day 1, Day 2 with sometimes other things like 1a, 1b, 1c or #chugs or Day 0 etc. When Day 1 comes (which will be June 29th), you open up the beer and drink it blindly, without removing the wrapping. You post a picture here of the wrapped bottle with your impressions (tastes like a boozy stout, not picking up any barrel, maybe some kind of fruit in the finish?) and then you post a picture with the wrapping off. As long as the box gets there by the 29th, you are good. If you are waiting around to grab a special bottle and that might cause the box to miss the start date, check with Adam - most likely better to send earlier than wait around unless your target is fine waiting. Sometimes it just stinks for your target to miss out on the fun as it's happening and then catch up. Hope that helps!
Since I am not a "super taster" and have never written a review that states anything like; "Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, rum, toffee, vanilla, hazelnut, toasted coconut, oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coffee, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Overpowering on rum at first, but gets better as it warms. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, rum barrel, chocolate, hazelnut, coconut, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with big strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, rum, toffee, vanilla, hazelnut, toasted coconut, oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coffee, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness; and rum/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, rum, toffee, vanilla, hazelnut, toasted coconut, oak, dark/brown bread, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, rum barrel, chocolate, hazelnut, coconut, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness and rum/oak spiciness balance; and no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness." I like to know what I am drinking before I evaluate it so I can have a clue what the brewer was looking for before I form an opinion.
for what it's worth you can have a few sips before unwrapping rate/note that then reveal and finish and reevaluate, just meant to add a little spice and fun to the experience
When the rounds starts, you’ll see that long reviews aren’t the norm. Just a few first impressions. It’s just fun to take a shot in the dark at what you may be drinking.
