I've had a few IPL's (if you will) that were excellent. A Victory Prima Pils clone would be a good place to start if making a hoppy lager or IPL is your goal (I love that stuff). I think a lager or IPL with a larger than normal amount of noble hops would also be quite interesting, especially if done well.
No, it would not be considered an IPA, since there's no 'A' in Lager. Well, actually, I guess there is, but you know what I mean. Sam Adams Double Agent is a very nice IPL.
No "u" can't, but Jack's Abby is taking names with some amazing IPLs (like the Second Anniversary ones hitting MA stores this week.)
Yeah, I did like that SA double agent. Why didn't they sell it in sixers? I would have bought several, but didn't want to keep buying the summer packs mainly for that one beer, so I didn't really get enough of it. At least RABC's Hans pils is out now, along with their four-squared, both of which satisfy my summery hops cravings.
It makes it whatever you want. You're hopping it like an IPA, and using lager yeast, so India Pale Lager would be a hybrid. Same thing if I want to use a german wheat yeast, and a bunch of wheat but make it like 50 IBU's and use American Hops... Hoppy Wheat or Hefe.
Or toss in some carafa III and some roasted barley, plus tons of hops and hefe yeast and make a Black India Pale Hefe.
Ballast Point has a India Pale Lager called Fathom that is bomb! Piggybacking his question: What temp would you ferment the IPL at? Lager temp or Ale temp? I'm assuming lager based on the yeast but just curious if someone knows for sure.
The yeast determines the fermentation temperature. I suppose you could play with the temp to maybe get a bit of fruitiness, but then, what's the point? You might as well brew an ale.
Hmm, guess we just didn't get any sixers around here. I did find founder's all day IPA here yesterday, first time I've seen any founders around here. It's pretty good. I've actually got a fair selection of hoppy, moderate ABV beers to choose from right now. Hopefully they don't all disappear when the really hot part of summer arrives. It's been cooler than usual most of this year, and I know that can't possibly last. But I certainly don't want all the refreshing, hoppy beers to be replaced by scotch ales, tripels, and triple-double-imperial stouts come the middle of august.
I just did this exact thing. Made a double batch of American Pils (40% 6 row, 40% Pils, 20% Corn). Hopped one up with 20mins .7oz Saaz + .8oz Sterling, 10mins 1.5oz Liberty, FO 30 min WP .8oz Saaz + 1.2oz Sterling. Hopped the other one with 5mins .7oz Simcoe + .8oz Calypso, FO 30min WP 1.5oz Mosaic + .8oz Simcoe + 1.2oz Calypso. Noble types got Budvar, new types got Munich Lager, fermenting @ 48*F now. Should be really good, the new school hops were supposed to be same timing as the noble (20 10 FO) but my propane died after 45 mins into the boil so I added all the hops and just let them stand.
