Thirty years ago Newcastle Brown was one of the world's very best canned beers. Couldn't tell you how it fares today but I suspect not too well.

I always thought New Castle was way better on tap.

Newcastle was once my favorite beer, back when I didn't know any better. I got it on draft and it was delicious. Got burned several times by those clear bottles. Just tasted terrible. So I stopped getting it. Cans probably help, although I think they moved the brewery out of Newcastle at some point and became much more of a macro brewery. (I think I saw a video about this somewhere.) So I tend to not purchase it typically.

Still, I do have some fond memories of one of the beers that taught me beer didn't have to be mostly flavorless piss water.

When the brewery in Newcastle-on-Tyne was closed in 2004, Scottish & Newcastle was the largest brewer in the UK and among the Top 10 worldwide. Can't really get more "macro" than that.

Well, I suppose the current ownership of the brand by Heineken (starting in 2009) and then the moving of brewing it to the John Smith Brewery in Tadcaster could be considered "much more of a macro brewery"... but "micro" Newcastle Brown Ale never was in recent memory.

Yeah it is when people think it is a micro that they like it and when they realize it is macro they decide to hate it. Fro draft and cans it is a decent beer

You just eliminated an awful lot of mass produced and "craft" beers which contains ingredients other than water, barley, hops, and yeast. I'm guessing you don't care for any Belgian beers? The Belgians use plenty of ingredients that wouldn't pass the Reinheitsgebot (spices, seasonings, fruit, etc).

I know that, so I was kind of kidding. That being said, I did used to have a "fruit beers suck" bumper sticker! But it helps to illustrate my point about E150 being a non brewing ingredient doesn't it?

Newcastle Brown is best on draft - a big can, really. It tastes fresher and less processed. It's not a worldbeater but still pretty good, sometimes you want that taste and not a mouthful of pine needles and the expressed juice of the white pith of citrus fruits.

I've also had the 10 pack of cans and thought it wasn't bad, except it was more like 8 bucks. I don't know where you found such a good deal. But this is a good choice if you want decent cheap beer, better than anything from Anheuser-Busch

I'd personally rather spend $8 on a 12 pack of Budweiser than a 10 pack of Newcastle cans.

I'll give that to you, but it doesn't change my mind. I just don't like Newcastle.

If you're talking about the Reinheitsgebot, well, there are many issues.

    - It's only applicable for one small area of the world (not even the whole of Germany until 1906)
    - It was for bread protection rather than beer protection, and for setting the tax on beer.
    - We are talking about a Brittish beer here.
    - Probably the largest one... Sugar is allowed in top-fermented beers! Including colouring agents based upon sugar.

Whatever, I'm done with it. It is a principal I have when homebrewing, keep the beer as clean as possible. That's all. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should! Later

Fair enough. Just trying to educate and clarify what it is and how it's not what most people think.
