On day one of my Newfoundland holiday I visited the Quiddi Viddie Brewery. It has to be in the most picturesque setting of all. It's in the old fish packing plant in QV harbour, complete with boats, gulls and cod. Just google the name and you will get their site. Great stuff, friendly people, and really good beer. This is a must see for anyone visiting the Rock. Anyone else been here?
Been there when I lived in St. John's. Not a big fan of their beer but the setting is amazing.Yellow Belly Pub downtown makes its on bear and its good. Enjoy the rock. http://www.yellowbellybrewery.com/
I agree that the location is absolutely beautiful, however I also agree that the beer is crap. They are trying to be a small macro brewery, which NFLD does not need more of. They need more breweries and brewers like Yellow Belly and Storm (when their beer is on, it's quite nice). http://www.stormbrewing.ca/
Been drinking a lot of Black Horse. I tried the a couple of the Yellow Belly, and they are good. But they are not sold outside of the St John's region.
http://www.nlliquor.com/Search/Results.aspx?keyword=yellowbelly You can find it in some NLCs outside of YYT, but you're right that it isn't everywhere. And there are currently 7 bottles of Storm Brewing beer in the NLC system. I think he has all but stopped brewing. Too bad.
If we're going to open it up to Nostalgia Macros like Black Horse, then I prefer Jockey and Blue Star (the Labatt ones) over the Molson ones (Black Horse, India, and Dominion). I though I preferred Black Horse / India, but a recent blind taste test (weird for these beers, I know) came to different results. For anyone interested, the history of beer in Newfoundland and a contemporary overview of the "Nostalgia Macros."
Just got back from two weeks on the Rock. Weather was perfect, the scenery was great, I even got to go cod jigging with some local bye's. (I caught the 2 biggest cod in the party) The only thing that could have been better is the beer scene. Gad, they sell a lot of Coors Light, Bud Light, etc. in NL. Some of the stores sell a small selection of Newfounland beers, but no one has the complete repertoire. And the beers were mediocre at best. Still, I'm glad I tried them. My favourite: Yellowbelly Pale Ale and the Yellowbelly Wexford Wheat.
