Heading to Newport for a friends bachelor party and arriving a bit early (2-3ish) and planned on hitting up some bars (breweries mostly closed at this time). Looks like Norey's and Pour Judgement have a decent selection? Any other suggestions? Also am looking for a beer store with a large selection... Bridges? Gold's? Thanks!
Bridge Liquors has a compact section but usually good options. I like Sandy's Liquors on Aquidneck Ave in Middletown a mile north of Easton's (First) Beach, there are a number of coolers down the left side of the rear aisle with almost entirely craft options. Pour Judgement and Norey's are the right track as far as options. Norey's just had an OEC tap takeover and they are probably still pouring, if you are into sours.
Appreciate the reply. I'll be sure to check out Sandy's I didn't come across it originally but appears to be popular.
Oh and another tip if you would like to take some purchased goodies to a meal, Winner Winner on lower Thames Street is BYOB. Great food there.
Norey's and Pour Judgment. Norey's is higher end eating place so the place is somewhat expensive but the food is good. I have never gotten food at Pour Judgment and enjoyed it. Malt has some craft on tap and some good food. Mission burger has one of the best burgers I've ever had and some craft beer. As far as liquors stores I suggest Sandy's, Newport Wine Cellar, or Bridge. Sandy's has the best selection and prices. Newport Wine Cellar has a good selection plus you can buy beer there at retail price then walk over to their sister shop a door over and drink it as long as you buy some type of food. It can be as small as a bag of chips up to a decked out cheese plate. Their Bahn Mi is killer and it's the cheapest way to drink out in town. You can easily drink there for like 2-4 bucks a beer. Plus you can sit and watch people play at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Bridge has a solid selection but there prices can run high. Last but not least I would suggest going to the Vanderbilt-Grace for at least one beer as the view is unbeatable. They serve bottles of 2Roads and Lagunitias so not the greatest selection but it's something everyone should do once. How long are you staying? This is going to sound weird but if you can go to Saturday's Polo match do it. It's essentially a huge tailgate party that happens to have a Polo game at the end. You can bring all your own food and beer. Tickets are like $12. Bring a cooler full of good beer and sit outside enjoying the day. It's hard to beat.
Hey @BergBeer thanks for the suggestions! Had no idea the intl tennis hall of fame was in Newport. I am headed down today to get there around 1pm and meeting my friends at around 4 (Norey's won't be open I just realized). Unfortunately it is for my buddies bachelor party so there is already a plan in place to be at block island all of Saturday but thanks for all the recommendations!
No problem! Newport is a strange town as far as beer goes. It is seemingly a waste land but there are a few lively spots. Have fun and congrats to your buddy.
One more question- I noticed on seekabrew that proclamation has distribution in RI. Is this accurate? and if so, is it easy to come across?
Yes they do. However, I have seen a huge dip in accessibility not only out in town but even at their own brewery. It is completely understandable seeing as they are in transition to a new location, but that doesn't make it suck any less. Your best bet it Pour Judgment in Newport. I don't go often but the times I have they have had Derivative: Mosaic on tap. It's a stellar single hop ale that falls into that middle ground between an IPA and pale ale. That would be your best bet to grab some. Bridge has had their cans in the past but it is VERY infrequent and mostly Tendril.
My view of choice is from an Adirondack chair on the lawn at Castle View Inn. They do have some decent taps at the patio bar including the Windward Weiss made for them by Newport Storm as well as Flying Jenny. Plus they let you carry your pint glass to the lawn like a goddamn adult instead of using plastic cups like so many other outdoor places.
Am I reading this wrong, or have you never really gotten a good meal at PJs? I often say their food is underrated but its actually not. Everyone I talk always loves their food, I think it just gets over shadowed by how good their beer list is.
Oh I read that as he has never gotten food at PJ but enjoyed drinking there. Guess Berg will have to clarify. I really enjoy the food there. Also thought of this thread when I saw a limo outside of Bridge Liquors leaving work last night. Maybe that was the bachelor party kickoff to purchase provisions?
You read it right. I have eaten at PJ's a fair amount of times and I have never enjoyed it. I'd much rather snag a burger at mission, pasta at Norey's, fish & chips from Fastnet, or food at Caleb & broad or Malt before going to PJ's. I really miss Hope. They had banging food and a solid enough tap list.
Haha wasn't us but there was a plethora of bachelorette parties going on. Seems like bachelorette heaven down there which wasn't bad for us. Ended up just hitting PJ and only drank. Solid tap list and atmosphere, if not busier than I expected for 2pm. Unfortunately my friends arrived earlier than I expected so I wasn't able to explore but I did head over to Sandy's and was able to snag a Stickee Monkee which I'm stil excited to try.
I'll throw in a plug for The Wharf Pub. Two bars inside, one outside. We've never had a meal there but have enjoyed their apps multiple times. Not a world-class beer list but usually solid.
Anything good for a few beers in Jamestown? Have a wedding at 4PM on a Saturday and might have a couple hours to kill before. Could do Newport too - only really familiar with Pour Judgment and The Landing. Looks like Norey's is out since it opens at 4PM.
Hmm the top 2 eateries/bars I hear about there are Narragansett Cafe & Simpatico. But checked on both of their locations on [popular beer check-in site] and the beers did not look inspiring. I've never personally partaken in Jamestown however so maybe someone else can confirm?
