Newport, RI (Nov 2013) - We don't "spill the beans" on this brew before you've tried it, but trust us, the latest in the Annual Release Series will not disappoint! Annual Release '13 is the perfect "after-dinner" beer, in the same fashion that one would perhaps sip a cordial and/or have coffee after dinner. An oh-so-apropos 'Newport Blend" of coffee beans- 50 pounds to be exact!- was provided by Ocean Coffee Roasters in Pawtucket, RI, and added to the dark base beer during fermentation, to bring out those bold, wonderful flavors. The beer was also aged on wood from rum barrels to add a hint of vanilla and bring out that "sipping cordial" note from the "after-dinner drink" character. "Pale and cara malts were carefully blended with German Chocolate Wheat, English Roasted and Chocolate malts to create a black-as-black base brew. Just enough hops were added to balance out these sweet malts in a single kettle addition." explains Brew Master Derek Luke. "We suggest you to enjoy this beer, straight up, without the cream and sugar, at 50 degrees F." he adds wryly. Mike Kapos, VP of Ocean Coffee Roasters, tells us that "We are the oldest family owned micro-roaster in the Ocean State! My dad's been doing it for 40 years. And despite advancements in technology, the coffee roasting process has remained the same." As with all our previous Annual Releases, the '13 was brewed within the first months of the year, and bottle conditioned for the last 6 months in 750ml bottles. Mike came to the Brewery in early April to help Derek add the 50 pounds of beans. The coffee and rum flavors were allowed to mature and fully develop over those months, to be ready for fans throughout RI, CT and MA, right in time for the holiday season! Only a single batch of the '13 (about 3,000 bottles) was brewed, so make sure to grab up this limited release beer before it‟s sold out! Here's how to join us for our launch of this new beer! Be one of the first 30 people at the Brewery with a bottle of '13 in hand (that‟s your ticket to this bottle signing event!), the night of Thurs., Nov. 14. From 6-8pm both our Brewer Master, Derek Luke and Mike Kapos of Ocean Coffee Roasters will be at the Brewery chatting about what makes these little beans so tasty and our beer so special!
