Would it be cost effective for a brewery to release a mainstream, BA beer that is available year round?

“We took staves from fresh bourbon barrels and we aged the beer on those staves and spiced it with a hint of vanilla,” said Westmoreland, who has been a Budweiser brewmaster for more than 30 years. “It’s an all-malt brew, and it has a perfect color that is similar to the color of bourbon itself. Batch No. 23185 has a nice vanilla aroma with a little oakiness on the end – it’s a great beer.”

I think so. It's a baby step from beechwood chips to bourbon barrel staves.

I think Saisons and Stouts will start to take off personally..

Saisons go with just about anything, IMO.. It's a not so visited style by some.. That and sours... Small market that is only getting bigger, but harder for normal brewhouses to produce these in bulk along side the batches that pay the bills.

Indeed. The question then becomes whether craft fans drink it or not, realizing that craft fan are not part of the mainstream

    Sorry, but you're crazy. :stuck_out_tongue:

That's a style that's seldom brewed as it is by craft breweries. I don't see it going mainstream any time soon.

"Craft fans" only matter to A-B as a means to an end. Plus, they'll never like anything A-B on principle...so it all evens out in the end.

i've only had one but it was thoroughly unremarkable. not bad, just not worth getting a whole movement going off of it. i think it must have something to do with the fact that lagers take so much longer, so you're releasing a beer that already lost a lot of hop character by day one.

I definitely can expect to see some mass produced "barrel aged" labeling as well as "bourbon" referencing. What's more manly than whiskey and wood..right? hahahaha

While I would not disagree about IPA or higher hopped beers starting to make it in the larger beer scene. They are still more common that others such as stouts and porters. Because of this I think it could end up being darker drinks I have been seeing an increase of them showing up but this could also just be a seasonal thing that I never really paid attention to...

True a few brews end up tossing around the term makers mark that make it good into the market now bourbon barrel gets slapped on anything that came into close contact with as much wood as a twig...

Amber ale, and in my neck of the woods, amber lagers are very much a past mainstream beer.

A standard ipa is starting to get easier but you still need a good beer bar to find the big boys like firstone, dogfishead, Stone etc.

I would vote for black ipa. I've had plenty of wimpy beer drinkers come up and tell me how much they love wookey jack.

I don't think it's so much that certain beers are becoming mainstream. I think it's that the idea of a good beer bar is becoming more mainstream. I can't say I have one yet out here, a few that are close, but when I go into manhattan they are becoming a dime a dozen.

I'm confused. Weren't amber ales big in the early '90s?
