Found this app - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/11/20/nextglass-app_n_6192856.html http://nextglass.co/ "it uses the actual chemical makeup of the drink. Trace Smith, the company's chief operating officer, said that around 30,000 bottles of beer and wine have been tested for the app using a high-resolution mass spectrometer -- a device that measures chemicals in a substance."
hah, I just made a post about this as well. Didn't see this one when I Was searching the forums. I saw someone make a FB post about it and thought I'd check it out. We'll see how it goes. It will be interesting to see how accurate its recommendations are. I also thought that seemed like an extremely expensive way to research/build out the app. haha
I've been beta testing it for a few weeks. It just went live yesterday IIRC. The scanner needs work and I think they updated the database adding more beer on the update before it went live but prior to that, the database was limited. It's a fun little app.
Saw it this morning as well; the reviewer seemed to be concerned with the number of beers catalogued to date. PSU_Mike (or anyone else with experience): are there limited brews in the llibrary and/or, would you recommend downloading?
So like Pandora for beer? Maybe they can let you make "stations" like IPA radio, RIS radio, etc.,....
It is a free app, I scanned a few yesterday but will have a lot more time today to hit a big chain store to try it on a wider variety. I think the more people use the scanning feature, the more will be linked because packaging codes vary from bottle to six-pack for instance.....
I downloaded the beta a few weeks ago and finally tried to use it on "A Tiny Beautiful Something" from Maine Beer Co last night but it couldn't find it. I might try it again another time.
Learning from mistakes is part of the process. I don't need this app playing God with my beer selection. Besides, I'm already encumbered by technology. One of these days I'll probably end up with one of those golfing apps that categorizes all the crappy swings I've made over the years.
Yesterday's update seemed to add a lot more beers to the catalog. There were even small (shitty) local regional breweries in there from my area. I think the catalog is a living organism that will constantly be updated. As for would I recommend it...it's still very young. I think it could be a very good app in time. As of right now, there is still work to be done. The more people, the quicker it evolves and improves. I say yes.
