Hi Folks, Back again for some advice. I will be in Nice for 10 days starting in late December. Beerfly has a few spots listed but there are only a total of five reviews amongst them all. Can anyone suggest any beer spots, great restaurants, cant miss sights, etc.? We wont have a car but do plan on taking the costal train to smaller villages and into Italy. Thanks in advance!
I'm leaving in 6 days so chime in if you have any ideas/suggestions. I will report back upon my return. Btw, did contact the craft brewery in Nice and the owner is going to give us a private tour & tastings which is super cool. I am going to bring him some US beer related stuff for his time and generosity.
We had a great time in Nice. Super nice city, plenty to keep you occupied for 4 or 5 days. Also went to Monaco & Cannes via Rail. Both are short train rides. The French trains were impacted by the general strike, but their website does a good job of letting you know which trains are running. Beerwise, the highlight of our trip was meeting with the owner of La Brasserie Artisanale de Nice. He took about 2 hours out of his day to give us a tour of his brew house, give us a primer on the local craft beer scene and most fun, let us sample 5 or 6 of his beers by sample I mean ¾ full glasses : ). His blonde is made with locally sourced chickpeas and was a great food beer, we also tried his smoked IPA, an really, really good pumpkin beer, a chocolate stout and one made with malts smoked with peat. He has a retail space so we were able to buy about ½ dozen bombers for consumption on New Year’s Eve (on the promenade). As far as craft beer bars, they are slowly starting to open. There is Boart, a tiny place with some well curated choices and a friendly owner, a Brewdog (to me always a solid choice), near the port there is Foam which is a pour your own place and there are two sister bars called Beer District that each offer about a dozen craft taps. Our final night we went to Pub Le Big Ben, which is a friendly Pub that specializes in Belgium beers and has had a few beers unique to them (including a Christmas beer that they only made 100 bombers of). I guess the owner is tight with some of the local craft breweries. In addition there a lot of Irish bars that have ok selections and Van Diemen’s an Australian bar that has great food and good craft beer section. Speaking of food, the city offers a nice mix of expected French and Italian choices, seafood, Asian, etc. We had some really nice meals at what I thought were very fair prices. Wine is good and very cheap with happy hour prices as low as 2.5 euro. Beers were 3 euro and up to 9 euro depending on where are you are and time of day. Let me know if you have any questions.
I haven’t been there in nearly a decade but the post above probably sum it up and update a bit things, great city with pleasant weather year round. Beer, you can find it anywhere in France these days including local craft one. The tramway and bus system also make it easy to go around in Nice.
