I'm a hop head I live for stunningly bitter IPA's and such. So my description may be off, but to my taste buds it was nicely malty compared to my usual, and very balanced. More malt to hop character than say a Prima by way of comparison.

I always look up Troegs and Sly Fox when I get home, I'm originally from Pa and the North East suburbs.

Love me some Konig Pilsener. It's cheap too! ($4.99/4pk 16oz cans)

I was at a bar that always has a very good and exotic tap selection. I was delighted to see that they had Mahrs Pilsner on tap that night. A group of guys came in who were looking for a suggestion from the bartender, and asked if the Mahrs Pilsner was good. The bartender (who was very good) responded in a dismissive tone, "Eh, it's a pilsner." The customers were immediately turned off, "Oh, we don't want that!" It's too bad that such an attitude was being handed down from someone seen as knowledgable.

If that very same beer -- which exhibits as good a pilsner malt base as you will find -- had 80+ IBUs of American hops and were instead called an Imperial Pale Lager, those "beer advocates" would probably be hyping the shit out of it at every opportunity. Sad, sad, sad....

Don't get Gordon Biersch where I live now or Capital, but yes, Autumnal Fire is great (as is Tett). I'm surprised Sprecher nailed a pils but if I see it next time I'm in Illinois in the summer I will keep an eye out.

I had the Dinkel Acker Pils on tap at the Lancaster Liederkranz recently and thought it was very good. It was the most expensive beer on the board unfortunately.

For me hop bomb ipa's satisfy the head, a good lager satisfies the soul.

The Dink is back? I don't remember it being an expensive beer when I was drinking it in the 90's.

Same here -- I was buying it for $8 a 12 pack. But yeah, Dinkel Acker is being imported by SH brands now and they're trying to get it nationwide, at least the last I heard. Still looking for it myself.

I was expecting a typical American, grainy, light-bodied Pils but it was almost spot-on for a duplicate of Urquell.

Isnt this beer just rebranded Spatan Pils?

No. It was brewed for export only by Spaten under DA license back when Spaten USA was exporting it, but it hasn't been brewed by Spaten, or exported by them, since AB-InBev took reins.

Also, I tasted Spaten Pis (when it was still available) and DA Pils side-by-side because I thought it might be the same beer. The Spaten was lighter and less hoppy -- gave me some respect that Spaten wasn't just re-labeling.

I enjoy the Tipo Pils as well. I also really like the pils from Carrobiolo. I recommend it if you can get it (limited distribution in and around Monza primarily).

Forst also produces some very respectable lagers

Two Roads Old Factory Pills, dry hopped, is fantastic.
I find that most American pills are corny.
haven't had Jack's Abby yet though.

In my neck of the woods I would go New Glarus Edel-Pils #1, Schells Pils #2 and Summit Pils #3.....really enjoy the NG....

An excellent lager that I don't think is made anymore is Capital Bohemian Lager.

Well, it was $3.90 for an 18 oz weizen style glass (Weihenstephaner, back on the board is $4). As opposed to $3 for the Spaten O'fest. I have to believe it's a different beer (or better dispensed) than what some of the RateBeer guys have been drinking recently; I thought it was very tasty. It looks like it's distributed by Spaten NA.

You may want to add Stoudt’s Pils to your list of beers to drink when you come back to PA next; it is also a high quality German style Pilsner.

A Pilsner that you would probably like since it is less hoppy is Trumer Pils. Unfortunately that beer is not distributed in NC. At 26 IBUs the hopping level is more restrained.

    Cheers!

P.S. During the summer Southampton Keller Pils is available. A tasty unfiltered German style Pilsner with restrained hopping. It is brewed at SBC in Pittston, PA.
