New Mexico is doing Pils right, I'd say. Marble Brewery's Pils just medaled at GABF, but I enjoy La Cumbre's, Santa Fe Brewing's and Il Vicino's. Here's the thing though, I find it very hard to differentiate between pilsners, as the beer to me has always been a beer you want to be clean, crisp and easy-drinking and thus, not really have anything standout. Am I wrong on that?

I will confess, when I drink a pilsner, I'm usually hanging out or throwing the bad boy back rather than sitting and contemplating the sucker, so I'm no expert on the style, but again, isn't that what a pils is all about?

    School me, per favore.

Also, since the title mentioned lagers too, Marble and La Cumbre regularly knock both of these styles out of the park. Thunder from Dortmunder alone will make you want to stay in New Mexico after a visit.

It only rates an 81 score here, but I tend to pick up three sixers of Jever Pilsener for every sixer of Prima Pils, and I like Prima a lot.

I am also a fan of Jever; it has a very nice dry character to it. My challenge is finding fresh Jever. Most of the time the beer is over 6 months old.

My solution is that if I can find Jever fresh I buy it (which is rare). Otherwise I will buy a fresh six-pack of Prima Pils (or Sly Fox Pikeland Pils or Troegs Sunshine Pils or Stoudt’s Pils or ….).

    Cheers!

I was much more taken with the IPAs from those breweries than the Pils. All seemed to have a little thing here or there in the pils. Diacetyl at one place, a little vegetal in another, and one had some thing I could not place but thought it could be a little to alkaline in the water. Glad to see they are doing well. Maybe it was due to being in NM in December and those weren't moving in the cold weather.

The NM brewers are doing a good job in general, and it is sad they don't get more positive comments on here.

That is a freakin' steal! Didja check the date codes, too? Or is that one of those "operating at a loss" distributors I hear so much about out 'der in PA? :grinning:

I'm one of the few that enjoys a well made lager over any ale. Such a difficult style to brew. I could go on and on all day about tasty lagers but lately I have been enjoying Firestone-Walker Pivo Hoppy Pils

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2210/83473

This beer made me change my mind about west coast lagers (very few well made lagers come from the west). It's phenomenal and has a aroma unlike any pils I've had (dry hopped with saphir hops). Not sure if it makes it out to PA but its definitely a beer worth seeking out.

I really enjoyed Kainz Brau at the onion Pub Micro brewry. I went to my God Daughters wedding there a month ago and found it quite good. I wish I had bough a case of it in cans but forgot on the way out.

I find my favorite Pilsners break the rules a little bit. usually by going a little maltier or breadier then usual and leaving a bit more after taste then most others do. I found lagunitas likes to go this route. Mamas Little Yella is a very good Pils with food.

But my life has been a search for the perfect Pilsner.

Don't forget Hometown Blonde...hopefully it stays a seasonal brew...I like it better than Edel Pils (which I'm hoarding a case of)

Same here -- much more Pils-like, though the Edel Pils is a great drinker. More of a Helles.

Based on some discussion with the regional sales manager at SH, it sounds like Dinkelacker is only available in the cans mentioned above and kegs.

I have some feelers out for availability, but so far no answers. I may have to talk with one of my small, local retailers.

Back when they brought the 2/12 package out (ten years ago! :grimacing:) it was priced $1 less per 12-pack than the Spaten/Franzaiskaner packages from the same wholesaler, and when we'd run sales ($7.99/12!) I got fond of it very quickly. I was never a fan of the Dunkel, but the Pils was a very nice option to have around, and I've missed it!

I had a local retailer (conveniently located on my way home, right around the corner from my house) who always had CD-Pils 12 packs at $7.99. I'm not sure if I was the only one buying it to keep it stocked, but he always had it. He even presented me with a .5 l CD-Pils mug that I use quite often to this day.

I didn't mind the Dunkel so much. It was pretty good to style -- which is rare here in the US, but it was hard to find. But I agree, I miss the Pils -- it was pretty much my "house beer" for many years.

Nice. I found a bunch of 200 cL D.A. Pils tulips at a charity shop a little while back, and -since I have so much glassware- only bought a single, but it's a handy sampler size.

Even "full-price" ($9.99, towards the end) the C.D. Pils was a very good buy around town. For many years the Berghof Dark was a good substitute for those budget-friendly Munich Dunkel imports! But yeah, a solid Dunkel can be very hard to come across (the H-P Dunkel has been on draught at the local Germanic-American Institute all this past year, so I have been pretty spoiled!)

I haven't ever seen the H-P Dunkel- I'd love to try that one. I'll go for Hoffbrau for a bulk purchase, although Ayinger is better (and more $$).

The Dink was good for the price, though a bit washed out in flavor.

I thought I read on their website at one time that the Pivo stays in California and surrounding western states and isn't distributed as widely as many of their other beers, but I don't see such a statement now.

Maybe, but I thought some Midwesterners have commented on it in the past?

If it's not available it would make me feel better about not having found it... and angry that it's not available!

It's been so long since I've had it, but I remember it as tasting very much like Optimator without the punch.

Ah yes -- I recall that I bought a 12 pack right around the time their importation was ending. I can't recall where or how fresh it may have been, but I think it was the same local retailer and he was buying up any Dinkelacker he could because he knew it sold.

That would be a major bummer. My east coast brothers would flip out over fresh Pivo!
