Thanks for the thorough response as always. I've always been curious what "destroyed" means when it comes to things like beer. You unfortunately (fortunately?) can't give it to a homeless shelter the way you can old bread, but can you give it/discount it to employees or some such? Are there state regulations on what can be done with it?

Smuttynose in NH has an old stock shelf with deep discounts that I'm not ashamed to say I've bought from in the past

Ben and Jerry's has a "grave yard" with some of their retired and most popular flavors.

Maybe they could do something similar for all of the old beer, only stick a big "FREE BEER" sign in front of it. I'm sure someone would drink it.

Or better yet, hand out old stock to people waiting in line outside the tap room.

Well, I live in New Hampshire and have a bunch of beer buddies so when one of us heads to Boston or Vermont or Portland or wherever we are usually buying for a number of people, and will buy a case.

Some of the old beer gets taken home by staff but a lot of is literally poured down the drain one can at a time. We rather it go down the drain than sell it for a discount and have people misperceive what we do and our core values. I think its far more damaging to sell old beer at a discount than drain pour it.

Understandable. But that sounds like the saddest job in the brewery! I hope you offer counseling to those affected

I know NS already released el lechedor this year and it was draft only. But, does anybody know if NS will be releasing apple brandy el lechedor soon? I believed it was released around this time last year.

I dont think apple brandy el lechedor is a yearly thing. Apple brandy barrels are hard to get and i dont think they have any, or if they do maybe they're experimenting with a different beer.

For Beer Meets Wood, it looks like Apply Brandy El Lechedor is going to be served there. Whether or not that is leftover from last year, I'm not too sure.

Has anyone noticed the lack of lines lately? The last few months I've went on different days/times and haven't encountered any lines, and typically there's plenty of space inside too.

Not complaining, and it hasn't been empty...it's just been a real relaxed, cozy place to chill...

    No college students since late-April/early-May?

Maybe? I never really noticed a lot of college students there in general though, or at any tap room.

Personally that would have been WAY too expensive for my Keystone Light drinking wallet.

Sounds like you guys need to make some vinegar, or work with a distiller to make some of the spirits with that stuff.

In fact, you should do a Barrel Society Leftovers fish fry. Make the batter using out of code beer, serve it in old Ale Street News pages, let people douse it in NSB vinegar, and...I dunno serve some whiskey too.

I know what you mean - a Harpoon IPA sixer used to be a treat.

I feel like, despite the tourist, summers in Boston seem to be a lot calmer then the rest of the year. Either way, I agree that it's been a nice change not having to wait in a line or having to hover to get a table.

...Honestly, using the beer in a fish batter would be kind of awesome.

Regarding this post, I've also been to Trillium's beer garden twice on a Saturday afternoon and virtually strolled right in. It was packed, but no lines.

Maybe it IS a summer thing that there's less lines places...but both times the city itself was packed with people, so it's not like the city was empty. Maybe some newbies have moved onto to something else now? Or perhaps there's simply so many breweries around, no single one is overcrowded?

    @masterob8

I hope you don't mind me tagging you Rob but I was curious if you had anything to offer on this topic. There's a thread about flights right now on the main board and discussions of their pros and cons seems to pop up now and again. You guys seem to have embraced flights about as fully as one could imagine (both in terms of them being attractively priced and you having so many beers always on offer) so I was just wondering whether you see them as a necessary evil, a selling point for the taproom that more than makes up for any extra work required, or somewhere in between.

And do the bartenders hate them? Or do people tend to tip more for a flight vs. a single pour making things even out? How much of the taproom business is flights vs. full pours? (I understand if you don't want to share that kind of info).

I think that's enough questions for now  Personally I like to get one flight when I go to try some of your newer stuff and then follow that up with 1 or 2 full pours. And I've never gotten even the slightest bit of attitude from any server when ordering a flight either. I'm honestly kind of surprised its such a 'sensitive' issue amongst beer geeks. I had no idea it was something people gave much of a crap about one way or the other.

Thanks in advance and no worries if you'd just as soon not get into any of this.

did a quick search and found that singles are not sold at the brewery...my assumption is that hasn't changed?

if not, i saw a couple of recommendations for places that do sell singles but am open to more options of places that break up 4/6 packs

between everything i want to bring home from Connecticut and Mass I don't want to over do it on quantities

Exhibit A singles would be great too
