Just saw in Night Shift's newsletter they have updated the recipe for The 87. If you remember they did the same for Santilli a few months back to bring it more in line with their more recent IPA's. I had Santilli for the first time this weekend since the change and I liked the update personally, subtle changes but very good. The text from the newsletter is listed below, I don't see this listed anywhere on their website.

    The 87 Returns, Reimagined
On Sunday we'll be releasing cans of our house double IPA: The 87! Our production team tapped into knowledge gained by brewing small batch IPAs like Buzz and Craigerator to revamp The 87's recipe for this batch. Some tweaks to the grain bill, one hop replacement, and a yeast upgrade later, we've got a more modern, still enticingly drinkable DIPA to share! Available in 4-packs and on draft at open.

Didn't they already update the recipe for the 87 earlier this year?

Man, I loved the original 87, liked the update. kind of like the idea of refining a beer to make it the best it can be but at the same time I do t want it to be that far removed from the original. Maybe just a new beer with a news name rather than straight up replacing it

Could be that it wasn't selling well, so a change was necessary.

I noticed on the latest newsletter that Darkling isnt listed as an upcoming beer. I thought it was a yearly Halloween-ish time beer. I said earlier that maybe after el lechedor they dont want to announce the beer until it's bottled and 100%, but at least some news about it would be nice.

My bad, I had read the update in the newsletter and assumed the previous change was Santilli since they mentioned the change to The 87 like it was new. Like they say never assume...

Perhaps it will be the first beer released to the [Not] Barrel Society

Anyone else excited about Craigerator II: Pool Party being rebranded to just Craigerator? Probably my favorite Night Shift beer so I'm hoping to see it become a more permanent option.

    Hey all,

As some of you have noticed we have started a partnership with Smuttynose. We are maxed out of production space in Everett and aiming to get our beer in more hands while we search for a more permeant second NSB home. More formal public news about this will hit next week.

But the short summary is Smutty's world class facility and state of the art equipment combined with their willingness to allow our brewers to be completely hands in every part of the process (Gypsy brew) led us to this relationship. We are completely dedicated to maintaining the same standards and anything that doesn't match our flavor profiles or quality goes down the drain (same thing we do in Everett). We are extremely excited about this and hope this is the start of the next chapter at NSB.

Thanks for all your continual support!

    Cheers,
    Rob

I'm sure your arrangement does not imply distribution, but would you consider distro in NH? We could use it!

No plans for NH distro yet. But its a future possibility depending on how things unfold. Its certainly on our long term radar.

Any chance you would be willing to take a stab at the differences NH poses when compared to ME and MA as Night Shift has done? I've heard anecdotally that NH is more complicated for distro but it would be nice to get your perspective. It does seem like many distributors/breweries/importers skip right over NH.

Sipping On the new 87. Tastes like a bigger Fluffy. It's nice. But it's not the lovely clean malt and hop DIPA it used to be.

Unlike the earlier reimagining of 87, or similarly Stones Ruination 2.0, this is just a totally different beer. With little resemblance to the original.

I dont get why they just didn't release it as something else.

Call it Fluffier for example and it would fly off the shelves.

Yeah I get the change and why the did it, but on a personal level the 87 is a beer I'd grab once every 2-3 months when I got a hankering for a good old school DIPA. Now it's likely something I'll buy once and never again as there's a new DIPA to try every other week and I lean away from DIPAs as it is.

Yeah there was something really nice about a classic tasting DIPA and I'd also grab the 87 fairly often.

While New87 is decent, there's that many options out there now that it's likely I'd go for something else at a similar price point.

Agree with both of your sentiments though I'm of the opinion that the new 87 is better than decent. It's less complex - way more tropical fruit, less bitterness, and the malt profile blends into the fruity hop notes. That said, the mouth feel is super soft and aside from the sweetness it drinks like a lower abv.

As much as I like the prior version, I rarely bought it and it'll likely be the same with this new version.

I got a lot of sweetness, pineapple, yogurt, hop candy, and minimal carb/bitterness in the new 87

Much happier about this than the new 87. Bought this for the first time today and really enjoyed it. I would enjoy seeing this and Annie Oatley around more often for sure.
