So this time last year I noticed that Night Shift had a Sour Futures program so I decided to buy a couple of every bottles because I love sours. However, every single bottle I open has a strong buttery popcorn (diacetyl) smell pouring out of the bottle. Has anyone else had the experience? Its alarming that the brewery hasn't addressed this issue throughout the year and consistently releases/sells infected bottles

Interesting. Diacetyl and sour don't usually go together... And they have a lot of pretty good ratings. What specific beers are you referring to?

You should contact them. I've had many of their bottled offerings, and have only ran into an issue once. I emailed them, and they immediately offered to make it right.

Also I don't agree that NS "consistently releases/sells infected bottles." With the amount that I've purchased, I feel that I would have run into infections more often if this were the case. I also know a ton of folks who do the same and I haven't heard anything like this. The Sour Tea release is the only thing from recent memory that sounds similar to what you're alleging.

I've actually heard the exact opposite thing. Everyone I've talked to that bought or traded for any of the sours drain poured the whole bottle after the first sip

Maybe Pedio. It produces diacetyl (buttery flavor) and tons of lactic acid. My palate is pretty untrained, but I feel like I've had some Night Shift that are just too sour, and have a bit of an off taste. Not sure what that was but it totally could have been diacetyl. I did the Sour Futures and still have some Mainer and Cape Codder, so I may update when I decide to drink them. I think Pedio is anaerobic so I'm a little worried that they'll get worse the longer I wait.

Edit: I should note that Berliner Weisses use lactobacillus, which also produces Lactic acid, so it may be more difficult to spot an infection.

You're gonna need to share some more substantial details. As it stands, this comes of as slander.

I've had a bunch of night shift sours and had no issues at all. Routinely delicious actually. I would think their sales would contradict your claim.

I just read the Mystery Weisse reviews. Yikes. I'd guess if there was a problem it would be there; the others seem well-received.

I have issues in the past, but not with diacetyl. I find their sours have a lacto character extremely similar to yogurt, which I find is a little off putting.

I thought the first time I tried Mystery Weisse it had diacetyl for sure. The second bottle I opened after a few months and it was a bit better, but still a buttery flavor. My Mainer Weisse and Somer Weisse bottles were fine, but I heard from a few people that the Cape Codder may have some diacetyl as well, which sucks because when I had it last year it was amazing. Haven't opened my bottles yet, so we'll see.

So not a single person has every enjoyed their sours? Your statements are being a little bit extreme.

I have had plenty and they have all been above average....maybe you just don't like the style? Before lambasting a brewery for releasing tainted product maybe do a little more behind the scenes research....

Never had an infected beer from Night Shift. Some have seemed to have more of a lacto character to them than other but never an infection. Haven't heard anyone else with that issue either.

I've had a few different Berliners that were basically vinegar when they were at their old brewery. Very inconsistent product but the beers have gotten better since then.

Not at all trying to bash the brewery, just stating what our experience has been.
