I'm in NJ for the holidays (from Chicago), and looking to try out some stuff I don't get at home. What should I be on the lookout for? I'm mainly into porters/stouts/other big heavy beers (this time of year anyway) but am open to anything that's a must-try.

Carton Epitome - massive imperial black IPA. No listing for it here yet, but you can find it on their website:

Boaks Monster Mash is the only NJ stout I can think of.

Are you north, central, or south NJ? Lots of great places in central that I could point you towards.

Kane Brewing has their 365 in bottles which is 30% BB imperial stout and 70% Quad

Kane Brewing also makes an oatmeal brown ale which is pretty good.

Weyerbacher Old Heathen which is a Russian Imperial Stout
Weyerbacher Tiny which is a Belgian Imperial Stout
    River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout

Thanks for the ideas -- I'm in Central NJ (should have thought to put that in the OP).

Anything from Kane and Flying Fish too. (Note Kane and Carton are tap beers, Flying Fish is bottled.)

depending on where you are in the state, you might be able to get some Captain Lawrence beers.

also - if you're going to be around all week (again, depending on location), you should visit the Kane brewery in Ocean. They're open on Fridays and Saturdays.

I would head to Harvest Moon for lunch or dinner or something. In New Brunswick. Also, I've never been, but I think Stuff Yer Face has a decent beer list. (also in NB) Not too sure of much else, but I would definitely hit up Harvest Moon.

Harvest moon is great. Also take a short ride down Rt 18 to marketplace, it's behind Kmart. Large selection there.

Definitely pick up some Weyerbacher (I love Merry Monks and Blithering Idiot), and Kane also bottles Malus, but I am not sure that is still on the shelves.

Stuff Yer Face has a pretty good bottle list, and if you're into stromboli that's the place to be.

This is good stuff -- thanks, everyone.

I've had many a boli at Stuff Yer Face, but I don't think I've been there since I was of drinking age (which was many years ago) -- I'm in my ancestral homeland for the holidays.

If you hit up new brunswick, try Old Bay as well. They have a nice tap selection. It's within waking distance of harvest moon

Not far from the Tap Room/Somerset Hills is the Stirling Hotel. From the outside it looks like an old western saloon, but they have a great beer selection and the people are great.

Try out George street ale house in new brunswick too.

The Stirling Hotel is tops. Small but great tap list pretty much always. Not usually very diverse tho - very hop friendly. Food is great though, and wonderful staff. It's probably a solid 20 minutes or so from you, but it will not disappoint.

Kane and Carton. Drinking the Kane Belgian Head High now they killed it again. Check beermenus.com and put in your zip code and you'll get the closest bars.
