I've been reviewing my beer drinking habits and realized I no longer buy session beers.

I define "session" as a brewery's main beer, which can usually be bought by the case all year round.

Instead, I'm mostly buying four packs and singles. In the course of an evening I'll rarely have more than one of the same beer (unless it is a vertical), and the beers I drink are always seasonal or one-offs.

I'm lucky to be able to find and afford a lot of great beer, but I was curious if there are others who do the same thing.

I don't usually buy brews by the case that as 'sessionable' as I can't finish them in a timely fashion. However I will buy 6packs of my favorites repeatedly.

I usually tend to stick to the same things, not just beer but most things... I'm the guy who goes to restaurants and gets the same thing every time.

My standard "session" beer is IPA - Southern Tier is my favorite, but they're all good, I don't think I've ever had a bad one. I can drink a shit ton of them and they don't mess up my stomach - my brain is another story . I do like to try other beers and have had some very good one but when I do they're generally one-offs. That said, it's about time to open a bottle of Three Philosophers...

I'm pretty much over sessionables as well, which I define as a beer that you can sit around and drink for a long while without going cross eyed. I really don't care for pale ales, and once something falls below a six I usually notice it in the mouthfeel and don't find it as satisfying. Kind of unfortunate since it limits what I try now but I've learned if I'm going to spend ten bucks on a six or four pack I don't want to have the sensation that it's missing something. Plus I don't have hours on end to spend drinking alcohol anymore so two or three suits me fine.

I am in the same boat with the OP. I will "tick" the occasional session beer but never really go out and get a case or six pack of it again. Most of the beer I buy is in the 5-7% ABV and since its winter and my favorite style is Imperial Stout big beers are in season!

First of all, I think your definition of "session" is off. Most definitions of session beers are those that can be consumed several in a row without becoming too over the top drunk. Usually this means ABV around 4.5 or less.
Second, if you're only into seasonals and one off, well, more power to you, but by passing on all year-round brews, you are missing out of some fantastic beers.

I guess if you define session as you please, what is stopping you from defining beer styles as you please? A delicious Heady Topper Stout perhaps?

I don't repeat beers that often, either. That said, I have 2 Heady Toppers left from my case, and it has been AMAZING being able to drink that every day if I choose. I'm going to try like hell to get another case next month.

Granted, Heady isn't typically considered a "session" beer. On the occasions that I do drink something that clocks in at 5% or less, I didn't buy it because of the sessionability (screw you, Mozilla; that is TOO a word!); I bought it for the flavor (e.g. Lambics). The low ABV is a pleasant surprise.

I think this is a great idea , inventing your own definitions. I shall define a dollar as 90 cents when paying my bills.

This is known as the "Humpty Dumpty Fallacy."

BTW the term you want for your OP is "flagship beer."

As you are starting to discover there is a long history of controversy on this site over the appropriate use of "session beer."

Well then you should also realize there's not much point in getting irritated with the hornets when you disturb their nest. :-)

I personally love many brewery's flagship beers. Tasty, accessible, affordable...I have a hard time trying to figure out why they don't fit into present day beer advocacy.

There's a big difference between a brewer's flagship beer and a session beer.. I'm too lazy to explain bc I'm typing on my phone :slight_frown:

If I didn't drink socially I probably wouldn't buy many session beers. Unfortunately I have low self control and usually end up indulging a bit to much. If im going to a party or BBQ i'll bring something economical and in the neighborhood of 5%(Sam Adams, SNPA, Highland, etc) that way if/when I end up putting down a 12 pack i don't make an ass out of my self. I rarely drink session beers when Im just hanging out at home or with close friends. I tend to find most sessions lack the flavor and body I've become accustom to.

I am going to ignore the 'Session' part of the OP but as far as buying flagship beers by the case that accounts for 90% of my beer purchases. My average consumption is a 6pack/ night Mon - Fri and a 2 6 packs on Saturday and another 2 on Sunday so nine 6 packs a week. So usually I buy 2 cases a week plus another 6pack of something else. Usually one of the cases is a Goose Island and the other might be Fuller's or Naragansett, etc. and the 6pack might be Founders or Great Lakes or Anchor, etc.
