The assumption is that there is an ABV/quality or ABV/enjoyment connection. Do you expect to pay more for loud music than for more restrained stuff? Or does the quality of the content matter more?
OK, you are actually getting more actual ingredients and stronger beers should be a shade more expensive.I'm biased perhaps because most of my favourite beers are of low strength. But in my view they offer more pleasure than stronger beers because 1) they don't have that much less flavour 2) I can drink more of them

That is surprising to read, seeing as how you have drank/enjoyed/rated close to 150 beers with an ABV </=5.40%

Using the music reference, I would have a hard time paying $10 for a cd with 5 songs if I can get one that is comparable for $12 and 11 songs. Maybe that 5 song CD has awesome songs, but that 12 song CD will have at least 5 great songs, maybe more.

It is possible, but I like my chances.

NO that's not got it. A bottle of low ABV beer has as much content as one of high ABV, the difference lies in the strength of the contents.Loud music needn't cost more than soft music and isn't necessarily more enjoyable.

Not to start a whole argument here, but the loud music comparison doesn't hold water. That is like comparing a 6% stout (Suicide Silence) to a 6% lambic (Bach). The volume of the music (or genre) is completely subjective. Whichever style we prefer, I think we would like our Bach cd and Suicide Silence cd to be comparable in playable minutes/tracks (comparing the abv/oz of beer) if both are $10. Style (loud vs soft music) has nothing to do with value, in my opinion, but some styles are inherently lower in alcohol, like bitters or milds. There are always exceptions to this rule ($2 for a 40oz of Schlitz is not worth the money) but for the most part, I feel more comfortable with my purchase when I get more abv for the same amount of money. If I am exploring styles, I would feel comfortable if the Bach cd (lambic) was the same as the Beethoven cd (blended lambic?) in both price and playable minutes (abv).

If I could afford this, I'd do it. Not to be a "ticker" - i.e. just trying to get my hands on a beer just to say I've had it - but because I thoroughly enjoy drinking a beer I've never had before. It's how I started finding out what I do and don't like, and there's a great feeling that comes from cracking open a bottle or can you've never even heard of and discovering that you love what's inside.

Sadly, since my beer budget is almost nothing, I generally have to go "hey, here's an $8 six pack that I know I love. Got my beer for the next two weeks!"

I drink a lot more session beers than the high ABV stuff but there are times where I think I wanna cut out the session and go with bombers/4 packs. Problem is there are still times when I want to just pound beers and drink a 6 pack all night. I think maybe as I get older I will get session beers less and less.

Putting aside session beers, which is not what you're talking about, I really love a lot of those regular, flagship beers. Generally my opinion of a brewery is strongly influenced by my opinion of their flagship beer/s.

Re Founders All Day IPA: I wonder how it would go down in Britain if a brewery promoted its actually-not-that weak beer with images suggesting you should drink it and then drive! :grinning:

Is this simply an objection to the marketing of the term "session?" Because you can enjoy several fine pilsners without getting brain-bombed. Tailgating before games, days at the beach and lazy afternoons in the yard with friends are not made for 8%ers (not for me, anyway).

I actually read the original post as someone LIMITING their beer experience, not expanding it. Limiting yourself to one-offs and seasonals doesn't sound diverse to me.

I found as I drank more I went through the phase where the OP is, and then drifted back towards "flagships" and "sessions". Nothing wrong with seasonals (I also love Summerfest!) and one-offs can be fun, but you should't limit yourself to special beer.

Like others and especially Kalamazoo said, that's just not what a "session" beer is defined as. I don't buy many session beers less the summer, and then I stick with Schlafly's can sessions as they are good, very sessionable beers.
The beers I "session" most are 6-8% beers too, but that doesn't make them session beers :stuck_out_tongue: It makes them my "house" beer. I go through about a case and a half per week, but not quite as much scotch  and I'm partial to ryes and bourbons as well.

You do realize there are significantly more seasonal and one-off offerings than year round beers right? The most likely segment of beer to push the limits and introduce new flavors are the seasonal and one-offs. I believe sticking to session beers only would be considerably more limiting. In any event my point is go ahead and taste the rainbow, eventually a six pack flagship beer ends up in the fridge sooner or later.

wait do you mean flagship beer or beer with low ABV that can be knocked back and still be able to function?

Cause in a way i agree. I hate to admit this but, there is soo many different beers that I rarely buy the same beer twice. and fortunally enough there is so many places, that I don't have to.

if we are talking about session beers in the content of low ABV, I have to disagree with you on that. I mostly drinks with friends and we will drink all night. Although I love my imperial stouts and barley wine, drinking THAT much of those will send my ass to a hospital. So i bring a 12 pack of black and tan, or even genny cream. GASP

I honestly liked the Daytime IPA better, but that's still good stuff.

Anyways....TC is damn cool. He can't have something that's available all the time. He's too badass for that.
