So how have things changed in the 2 or 3 years since we last discussed this topic at length? I'd say Washington breweries are producing more rare beers than they were back when @Mages64 lamented the lack of walez coming out of the Evergreen State. I think we are also seeing a lot more variety of styles and brewing techniques than just a few years ago. Although we have more breweries than at any point in our history, it's safe to say that we are still behind Oregon in the rare beer department, but I think we are making progress.

All I can say is, more than a year ago now I stood in the longest line I have ever seen for a Washington beer: Reuben's Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout. And I bet others have waited even longer since then for other limited offerings.

I know that many of you know a lot more than I do about what's really happening out there. So what are your thoughts? Discuss!

Reuben's BA stout is the craziest release I've ever seen here. Rusty Nail lasted longer than that and there were no lines.

I've got a bottle from 2013 and 2014 still. I'm guessing it won't be as crazy next year with their brewery expansion.

Agree on the point about "rarer" or more limited "world-class" brews being produced on our state. Don't know if i'd call them walezbro just yet. Hype factor isn't there, I think, as it exists with other breweries. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, I'm happier with BBA Dark Star Coffee than with BCBCS, for example (coffee stouts being one of my favorites). Bottom line though is - if you're looking at trading WA brews for other rarities or "walez", get a solid trading partner who lives close to some of the breweries/beers you want to try. They'll love Fremont, Reubens, Black Raven, etc - and more than likely will reciprocate over time with some of the beers you're after.

Well, I think a lot of the things said in the Late, Lamented Thread still hold true. We, as drinkers/consumers/purchasers still don't particularly to play the hype game, or falsely drive up demand. Our brewers, still focus on making great beer that we drinkers happen to love drinking. If it sells in an hour, a day, a week, or a month, they don't seem to care, as long as it sells, which allows them to try the next new thing. Beer is still an integral part of the PNW lifestyle, like it is no where else in the country. And, we all still like to go Elk fishing when the tide is right.

It is true that beer-drinking friends of mine, people who love good beer and who have spent more time at local breweries than I have (including Holy Mountain, Stoup, Peddler, Urban Family etc.), are vaguely aware that these limited release beers come out, but none of them really seem to care. It just doesn't seem to register as something they'd be interested in. I tell them about them, but they seem to view it all as kind of an oddity/side show as they invariably order a trusty glass of Interurban or Top Cutter.

Look at the recent Bartells beer. If that beer were released in, say Illinois, there would have been several main page threads, the ratings would be near 5's, and the ISO/FTs would have been asking for/offering body parts. For us, it caused a bit of a kerfuffle, and we're on to the next shiny thing. Like the Bale Breaker brewers night at Kulshan tonight, featuring Bottom Cutter!

Another interesting point related to this "rare beer in WA" matter has to be distro. 2-3 years ago we didn't get many of the "rare beers" we get today from other states (Perennial, Prairie, Evil Twin - off the top of my head). I've traded for Abraxas these past 2 years, but this year I managed to get 2 bottles here. I'm sure there's other breweries folks seek that now distribute here.

FWIW - most folks I sent Triple Trifecta and Bartell's to have really enjoyed it. I agree with you from the hype standpoint, but like I said - once folks know you have good taste and similar to theirs' they'll be glad to receive whatever you send them and "rate" it at face value hype or no hype.

I don't get to spend too much time drinking at the bars or breweries, etc. but whenever I do, I see all these "regulars" that come in and just ask for an IPA or for something that they drink regularly (Manny's comes to mind). I also see many people just keep ordering 2nds and 3rds of the same beer - they just say to the bartender "I will have another." I think this is just the way WA market is in general.

I remember being into the sneaker game a few years back and how ugly it currently has turned out now due to resellers, people who are trying to monetize from rare goods (creating fake hype), etc. I am glad that beer game is still somewhat pure here in WA.

I actually think the lack of hype works its own kind of magic. You send some random IPA to a trading partner commemorating the anniversary of some drugstore they've never heard of, it might tend to lower expectations a bit.

For those who remember the movie "The Jerk," it's like when Navin discovers the muzak radio station coming out of St. Louis: "If this is out there, just think how much more is out there!"

Speaking of which, is that still available? I'd love to get my hands on a bottle or two if anyone from WA is heading south of the border any time soon.

I'm coming down for the Farmhouse Festival this weekend, but haven't seen a Bartells (Seattle and south king co) with bottles for a while.

Perennial and Prairie are still unheard of in my neck of the woods. Some Evil Twin beers have turned up at places like TW, but there's been little hype about them - I'm not sure a lot of local beer geeks are even aware of them.
