I am brewing my first batch of homebrew. I bought the Noble Trappist Ale kit from midwest supplies. They're saying my SG is supposed to be around 1.049-1.053. I took a hydrometer reading after my wort cooled at its at around 1.082/19.5 degrees Plato. The only thing I did wrong (that I know of) is I burnt some of the LME a little bit; thats it. Any insight? Thanks, guys. :grinning:

You made a 5 gal batch, right?

I had approximately 3.5-4 gallons of wort. I know the addition of the extra gallon or so of water will bring it down, but will it bring it down that much?

If you are brewing extract don't even worry about it. If you hit your volume it will be exactly as stated on the package. Ball don't lie

Yes, you're extra 1.5 gallon will make a big difference in gravity.

    0.082 * 3.5 = 0.287
    0.287 / 5 = 0.0574

By calculation your gravity would be 1.0574, pretty close to projections.
