Cheers CAB I can blame your quote if this all goes wrong...
So should we try and iron out the wrinkles?

    The possible why nots?

Peeps only really trade in the hope of landing a whale and we have yet to really succumb to whale culture?

UK and NI are fairly small geographically and fairly well connected, most beers tend to wash up in our local specialist offies eventually?

    It's a bit of a faff?

    Postage is a pisser?

I would imagine some folk here have traded beers so it's not unknown
Suggestions, additions, advice, opinions, is it a good idea, bad or indifferent? are welcome.

This thread wasn't created purely for the following purpose but could go some way towards organising a Secret Santa thingie come December if folk are interested.

Trading is a big thing in the US because of the size of the country, and the fact that plenty of brews don't get distributed to most of it. Under those circumstances, the desire for people to swap beers is understandable.

As the OP says, the UK is small and much of the beer can get around quite easily through various channels. Also, the brewing scene over here isn't as extreme as the US. People probably don't feel like they're missing out if they haven't had such and such a beer from another region, so the motivation isn't there. No one wants to give the post office a ton of money so they can swap bitters.....

I actually do a lot of trading probably around 1 a month, mostly with peeps in the US

Built some great friendships with my trading partners

It's a good way to get some excellent beers, and if you find someone who is fair it works out well in terms of money

The way I look at it is £££ for beer £££ for postal £££ total over the number of bottles your getting gives you say £6 per bottle...

Say you to cotteridge wines and your paying £10 for a BORIS and your getting say aPrairie Bomb for £6 that's good value etc

I've traded, and with people from the UK forum (Zimbo, Ruds, Bevis), just never publicly set one up. That's all I meant!

Just yanking your chain bud. It was a good jumping off point to test the waters and see if there was any interest or need to instigate a bit of trading. And Secret Santas always look cool.

Yep, I've traded UK wide and into Europe but as CwrwAmByth has said we tend not to shout out and publicise it. British restraint, stiff upper lip, Presbyterian stoic resignation (that's me) and all that.
Anyone have any Pliny on the go? Before Christmas I missed two golden opportunities to try it because of family and work commitments. Willing to entertain notions of Heady Topper as a consolation prize too.

To be honest I don't think I ever get anything worth trading
Most of the stuff I get that's local doesn't have the big reputation of say
Luckies, Dark Star, Kernel or Magic Rock.

I have exchanged beers and plan to send some out but it's been on a more relaxed affair
rather than this swapped for that, rather here is a beer I think you'll really like

Temptation, Tyne Bank, Anarchy, Three Kings and Allendale are the only local brewers doing interesting bottled beers hereabouts and unless Im very much mistaken, not an 'epic whale' amongst them.

I'm lazy, tight and there's enough interesting beers in local shops/bars to keep any whale hunting urges in check.

Probably because beer trading outside of the beer trading forums isn't allowed in order to keep the other forums clean and focused.

It's allowed or isn't allowed? I'm confused, are we allowed to set up trades here then?

Just sending out a few feelers as to how peeps feel about the merest prospect of a suggestion of a possibility of trading and/or a secret Santa. We'll keep any trading above board and on the correct one.

The trading forums on here are so dominated by lower 48 only requests or Belgian whale hunters it's not even worth us lot reading them, except for the lulz.

I do trade semi-regularly with the US but that's through my own network of contacts. Would like to start trading for continental European beers as I'm fairly ignorant about them and there's probably a mountain of great stuff I'm missing out on. There's been a big push on RB lately to do this. No reason it can't be done on here.

Agreed. There's no reason why we can't set something up to cater to non-US members. Open to suggestions.
