Mine was picked up yesterday at NoDa and says ...Gold IPA beneath the 4/28 date.

Some of the can dates are getting rubbed off, I've noticed. If you have the shiny cans, it's super fresh. The older sticker labeled cans, non-shiny, are at least 3 weeks old. Shiny are 4/21 or 4/28 I believe and the ones with Gold and the date are about the same time frame. Have 4/28 at home - so good!

As for the diacetyl comment, I've never gotten that from any cans. Maybe it was a bad batch or canning?

I had some of this batch and noticed the same. I think my threshold for diacetyl is pretty low though. I still managed to power through the 4 pack, so it was not undrinkable by any means, just slightly buttery.

My buddy brought me a couple cans as a present. They had the old sticker design and no freshness date so I assume they were probably a couple months old. The aroma wasn't quite as bursting as I was used to but the flavors were pretty much all there. Even in the last couple sips I was like "God, this is such an excellent beer even when it's not so fresh."

I will be in the Kannapolis area Saturday and Sunday. Where would be the closest/easiest place to get HDR?

Can you get cans of HDR at the brewery? Also, any good bottle shops in Charlotte?

Try Lil Roberts Place in Concord. That's your best and closest bet for Hop Drop.
Total Wine in Huntersville & Charlotte University are other options, as is Davidson Beverage Co. in Davidson. Not sure if Kannapolis has any good places.

Yes. There's quite a few forums about Charlotte and where to go. You can search forums or search Places and look for Charlotte for good info,

What I bought today was can dated 5/5, so it's 3 days old, I don't believe you could find an old stale HDR on the shelf if you tried.

The nose on this one is as impressive as a fresh Abrasive, more tropical fruit vs grapefruit, taste follows .

So, I must have a very high tolerance for this taste, because I just finished a can of the 4/21 dated ones, and it is as good as ever. Thank you @Nodabrew for being awesome and being local. This has become my benchmark beer that I judge every other IPA against. And everytime it isn't as awesome as HDR, I juts wish I was drinking an HDR.

Are there any liquor stores in the city center that sell decent craft, hopefully including NoDa. I am going to be there next Tuesday -> Wednesday morning, but will only have an hour or so 7-8pm to try and track down cans. Common Market South End was the closest place to our office, but if there was anywhere within the rt 227 loop that had it, would be perfect.

Unfortunately I think you're out of luck. There really isn't a retail store for beer downtown (that I can think of, at least).

You might check with NoDa and check distro to food stores, they always seem to be open, stay open late open early .Find a mule to buy what you want, set up a meeting and pay the guy and throw him some beer.
