A different thread about the necessity of aging different styles got me thinking about this. I'm not, in any way, an Ahab. I don't really have the money nor, honestly, the desire to track down the vast majority of the uber-whales. I was lucky enough to get a few King Henrys and to try Westvleteren 12 once, but that's about as far as I go. Therefore, as I'm not really in the know, I pose the following question. How many (%-wise, etc) of beers that most BA's would consider 'whales' are barrel-aged in some way? Are there any (maybe outside of PtY) that aren't? What might make for good non-barreled (and I'm obviously including things like lambics in the 'barreled' category) whales or potential whales?

If it's not barrel aged, it's too easy for a brewery to replicate over and over again, leading to less rarity, leading to diminished wale status.

Funky Buddah has a couple non-BA whales, but they're working on increasing capacity now.
KtG is a somewhat of a whale.

Well, first you need to get someone to actually make up a list of what would be considered a "whale"....I don't think that anyone has done that yet.

Until then, we are all just feeling around in the dark.

I suppose whales are also something I will not track down. I do not see the need to do so at this point in my craft journey. Rather I consider the Italian craft whales in my eyes as they are hard to come by. But as I had said a certain beer manager at Wine Works is taking the bold and courageous risk of having such and they ARE selling with great results.

I know I drive everyone crazy with this love of Italian craft but I can not help it. I do believe in it and to me it dispels the negative stereotypes of Italians in all faucets of life. We can be great brewers because of our respect for tradition, yet be bold in the way we think. No other part of the world makes beer with chinotto or other ingredients.

Surly Darkness...also, I don't know if you'd consider them wales, probably porpoises or some other lower order cetacean, but Xyauyu series is not barreled.

Really? I thought they were aged in wine barrels for some period of time.

Nothing in the B United description leads me to believe they are barreled, and I've never heard otherwise. That said, there is a barrel-aged version hitting shortly, but I was referring to the precious metal series.

Well, a personal whale for me is a bottle of an interpretation that I tried in Italy, called Terre. I've tried with no avail to trade for it a few times, but sadly no such luck.

WTF happened to Tucher Dopplebock (Bajuvator). It used to be EVERYWHERE on the shelves, and for a great price. Damn good beer too. What gives?

I think (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) when they're talking about the 'solera' system and large-scale oxidation, they're referring to a barrel-aging procedure used for Sherry in Portugal. I could be wrong here?

Edit: According to the very bottom of that page, it seems as if, perhaps, it's largely or wholly done in stainless steel?

Teo's objective is to allow Xyauyu to perfectly oxidize during the aging proces of 2.5 years {oxidation plays a critical role in aging port, sherry, as well as our vintage beers - too much oxidation will ruin the liquid - too little will not optimize the change in flavor / aroma during the aging process} .Here's how Teo's system works: Xyauyu is transfered to a steel vessel with transparent membrane and a "oxygen hat". After several tastings during the 2.5 year aging process Teo decides when it's time to bottle (it all depends upon the oxidation velocity).
